I purchased as described a "NEW OLD STOCK" Leica summicron v4 jahre "canadian" 7 element lens.

It came with:

1: Leitz box w "Made in Midland Canada" on it and and a sticker showing 1913-1983

2: Ernst Leitz warranty card unsigned (Published in West Germany) with a serial number 318***** written with a pen - which dates it to approx 1982

However...I have questions

1: The Lens itself does not have the serial number engraved anywhere on it.

Is this normal? How would one have any reference to the serial number if it was not on the paperwork?  Did Leica decide not to engrave serial numbers on some lenses ?

2: Compared to a v4 summicron "Made in Germany" this Canadian version is 37 grams lighter. (V4 Germany = 157 grams) (v4 Jahre Canada = 134 grams)

Why would there be such a difference in weight? Was the build material on the Jahre v4 different? Could it have less elements than described or not made with brass?

3: Is this a rare lens? and is this a real Jahre v4 lens?

Hoping to see if anyone here has any experience on this lens. I've tried searching online but I did not get hits with detailed description. I'm perplexed why it would not have a serial number on it and why it would be different in weight from a German version.

Thanks in advance.

It has a serial number. It is on the diapragm ring. And the weight is different from the German version since there is a plastic part in the Canadian version that was changed to metal in the German version, hence the higher weight of the German version.

Thank you! this helped. I just found it!!! - Its located underneath the diaphragm ring so you won't be able to find it unless you look at the lens from the bottom up:)
