Hi,

I am not too happy with battery life in the Q3.

I am using the genuine battery and have:

  • Set display to evf extended so rear screen only comes in review mode or menu
  • Disabled wifi/bluetooth

What can be done to get this camera to stay alive for at least half a day. The battery life is hugely disappointing.

Any suggestions or tips would greatly be appreciated.

hi i have had the same problem,i have three genuine leica batteries and have been getting anything from 70 to 150 shots on a full charge with everything turned off. just been on holiday and i took it in to the LA store and they were very helpful but couldnt figure out th problem. i  also took it into samy's in LA and the repair guy there thought it may be a short inside the camera. i am gonna have the camera and batteries and charger sent off to leica for testing.

After using my q3 last weekend in Windsor taking 40 shots, turning it off and placing back in the bag, I took it out yesterday to check the settings only to find the battery empty on red

The same to me… after 50-100 pix, the red Flash is on… my oldest SL battery lasts for 350 shots, but the new one is driving me nuts… and after updateeto 2,0 it still freezes

I yesterday had my first slightly longer usage of the Q3. Beside some oddities the power consumption was no point of concern. After 150 shots there was just a tiny bit missing on the battery symbol. So currently I would expect around the same battery life as with the Q2 - but maybe it's too early for a final conclusion.

But the FW definitely still needs a good bunch of work.

I've had my Q3 since July and despite changing my settings the battery life is a bysmal.  I've turned off LCD screen, after trying my "auto Shut Off's" at 5mins, 2mins now set at "off".  I do not use burst shooting prefering only to take single shots.  I brought a new battery with the same issue so I don't think the actual batteries are to blame, so it something using it within the camera that we can't see?

I have noticed on a number of occassion the video has decided to switch itself on giving me on one occassion 3mins of my feet!!!   Also I've taken it out of my bag and noticed it recording ...  I'd dearly like to be able to permanently disable video but it seems we're stuck with that even though many cheaper cameras make this available.

In what way, Daniel  ? Fixing bugs or additional features ?

So far I'm pretty happy with my Q3, no serious complaints ... 🙂

Amazing, I'm using only one battery and never run out of juice (yet).

There must be something the way you have set up your camera that's causing this tremendous drain. But what ?

Some of my settings ...

  • Connectivity : Off
  • Auto Review : Off
  • AF Assist Lamp : Off
  • Touch AF : Off
  • Touch AF in EVF : Off
  • Optical Image Stabilization : Auto
  • Auto Power Off : 2 min
  • Display/AF Auto Off : 30 s
  • EVF-LCD : EVF Extended
  • LCD Brightness : 50 %
  • EVF Brightness : 50 %
  • EVF Frame Rate : 60 fps

Thats like driving an electric car without, lights, heater, wipers etc. etc..  I want everything On' no compromises in my setup. Overall Leica should do a much better job battery/power wise.. (I carry 4 Leica batteries for a days shooting with my CL)  🍻

No it is not.  I don't drive my car with the lights, heater, wipers, etc. on the whole time.  Only when I am using them.  If I need the heater, I turn it on.  If I need the lights, I turn it on.  I suspect Knorp does the same thing if he needs any of those features.

I am going to check my settings compared to his to see if I can improve on my dismal battery performance of my Q3.  Same dismal performance as my Q2 had.

One rather obvious cause that may have been overlooked:  Leave the camera on auto-shutoff and put it in a camera bag. It will keep switching on and off until the battery is empty. I did that with an SL a few days ago. I even had to put the battery in the freezer overnight to revive it.😵‍💫

And yet, you still buy the cameras! Why on earth you would compromise when spending so much 'dough' on a high end camera? I love my Leicas and just accept that the cost of extra batteries are part of my everyday kit..

4 batteries? That will get me over 1200 shots on my CL… Except when I use an OIS lens. That will pull the number down by about 20%. Disclaimer: I use high-capacity Jupio and Hähnel batteries.

I carry two batteries with my CL and rarely use the second battery in a day’s shooting. If I wanted to make toast and microwave popcorn I would have bought a kitchen not a camera.

I wasn't saying I did not like the camera.  Q2 and Q3 take fantastic pictures and you just have to adapt to the battery issue.  I have two.  All I was saying is that your logic was, well, a bit illogical.

Of course, if you follow Leica logic you end up in a cul-d-sac! Batteries costing astronomical prices. Certain Leica camera’s costing $10k+ being delivered with inherent faults, times calculated in months for in warranty repairs, these facts are more than somewhat illogical… 🍻

I did that recently with my M10-R and when I transferred from the card to my computer I had over 150 pure black files to look at before getting to the few frames I wanted to edit.
