Greenhilltony Posted July 19, 2023 Share #1 Â Posted July 19, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) First thing first, I own neither a real Summicron 35mm 8-element nor a real IROOA hood. Mine are the Light Lens Lab problem. The LLL 35/2 I bought was accompanied by a Leica UV filter from the pre-owner. I see it has a bit smaller external size than the front ring of the lens, so that the hood can be pushed in and clip into the ring. Recently I want to try using a yellow filter on it to try shooting monochrome. I bought a made-in-China yellow filter, but it's a bit bulkier and the hood cannot reach the front ring of the lens itself. Is there any other choice besides buying a ridiculously priced Leica yellow E39 filter?
Advertisement Posted July 19, 2023 Posted July 19, 2023 Hi Greenhilltony, Take a look here How to find filters that would not affect clipping the IROOA hood on 35 cron 8-element?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
pippy Posted July 19, 2023 Share #2  Posted July 19, 2023 (edited) There are some 3rd-party manufacturers whose filter-ring diameter allows the use of the IROOA (or any other Leitz clip-on hood). Having just had a look through my filter box such brands as B+W, Hoya and Kenko all work (at least the ones I have do) so finding such a filter isn't impossible. I also have the LLL 8-E and LLL IROOA and, using these items, have not had any problems with such a match. What I normally do, however, is pick up genuine Leitz filters on the used market. In the UK their 39mm filters can usually be found in the £25 - £35 range and, IMX, they have always been well cared-for by their previous owner/s. Incidentally the first time I had a problem with a filter-ring being too large was with a VHBW-branded 43mm filter with my 40mm f1.4 Voigtlander Nokton. This lens has an externally-mounted bayonet-fit hood and the filter didn't allow the hood to be fitted. Changing over to a Hoya filter - whch has a narrower ring - solved the problem. Philip. Thank you Philip, very helpful and informative. I am surprised that the used Leitz filters are much cheaper in UK, compared to my search results on the e-shopping websites in China, where the common price is around £60. Happy to help, Greenhilltony. I (almost) never buy used Leica filters from the www as they are usually (IMX and O) overpriced. Having just had a quick look at the sites of the two UK dealerships I normally use between them they advertise the following. Leitz (assortment of UVa and contrast-filters) : £12 x1, £17 x1, £19 x2, £22 x2, £25 x1, £29 x1, £35 x3. For interest here are results for Hoya and other : £6 x1, £7 x2, £8 x1, £9 x2. There is even a genuine Leitz UVa with clean glass but dented front rim available for a mere £5. As I would normaly never screw anything onto a filter this would not be an issue! The more expensive Leitz filters in the above list tend to be 'Black-Ring' with the 'Chrome-Ring' ones being at the more affordable end but, in all honesty, even £35 is still a bargain. Some 39mm filters are normally outside this range. I think I paid £35 for my boxed and keeper'd POOTR Circ. Pola but that was a number of years ago. Nowadays they tend to cost a fair bit more. On which note here's a bit of a head's-up. The POOTR has two rings; the mounting ring and the moveable ring. These two rings together make the front-to-back depth too great for the IROOA or 12585 (etc) hoods to pass far enough to allow the clips to engage with the indent on the outside of the front rim of the 8-E. The obvious solution would be to buy one of these; Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! There is a considerable advantage to using one of these in any case as the hood/filter group swings out by 180 degrees to confirm polarising orientation and back into place for shooting. This example is also currently available for the very reasonable sum of £45. Hmmm.............. Philip.
