Leather or rope strap pros and cons

I am looking to ditch the strap that came with my Q3. I have found the COOPH/Leica rope straps with single or double rope and in black or red.

Is going for a bright color (red) asking for too much attention in a rope strap?

Are the double rope straps too bulky for a camera bag or for general use?

What do you use....rope or leather?

I tried the double rope strap on my SL2-S and found it too bulky. I also didn’t like the stiffness and roughness of most rope straps. I definitely prefer either synthetic straps like the PD Leash or silk straps like the Artisan & Artist ACAM-310N. I have the ACAM-310N on both my M10 and Q3, and I use the Leash on the SL2-S.

I never use leather straps since I shoot mainly outdoors in all sorts of conditions and I imagine leather straps don’t like getting rained on so I’ve always avoided leather straps in general and stuck with either synthetic or silk straps. The silk straps are very smooth on the skin, and quite pliable which is what I prefer. They’re also very strong and durable.

PD all the way...

Anchors on the body for the Shoulder strap, with an PD plate and anchor for the PD Wrist Strap.

Very flexible set up that can be on and off in an instant.

After trying a ton of straps I found this the most comfy - Artisan & Artisan Silk Khaki - YMMV

I ditched all my PD stuff, the hard plastic connectors on the end of the strap will end up scratching the camera body for sure.

I like the AA silk ropes but have seen a few used on ebay that look quite worn so not sure how long they last before they look rough and for the price I want it to last. Also been looking at Angelo Pelle leather straps but lot's of criticism of him on forums saying delivery takes forever and that he's very rude when you ask where your strap is. Rock'n'Roll leather straps also look very nice, might try one of those. Leather should be ok in bad weather if treated with a suitable balm, after all we've had leather jackets and used them in the rain for decades.

I have a double COOPH strap in red, a single COOPH strap in red, a couple of PD straps and a cuff but only use the single COOPH when using a strap now. The red looks and feels superb, the double is too bulky and I too do not like the PD connectors which constantly bang against the camera when I do not use a strap - which is frequent when I use either of my Think Tank Mirrorless Mover 20 or Oberwurth Q2 bag.

I have a Cooph rope strap that I really like. I also use PD straps. I wish I could put PD anchors on the rope strap, so I also have the option of using a PD Cuff - wrist strap - at times.

I bought the anchor kit from Peak Design and then had a local leatherworker replace the rings on my (Leica) Cooph strap with the anchors. It's been working great for the past 4 years.

Am I the only one who finds the Peak Design anchors UGLY? How can you put them on such beautiful cameras as an M-Leica or a Q?

I've been telling Leica for years that they should develop a system for quickly removing or changing the camera strap, perhaps similar to what the TL had. So far, they haven't listened to me. Maybe it will help if more people contact Leica with such a request.

I completely agree. The Peak gadgets are generally fussy looking, if not offensive. Leica's entire aesthetic is the opposite of these devices. To each his own, but I'd never strap a PD on my Q2M. Just my opinion.

Peak Design, shown here;

Amazon.com : Peak Design Leash Camera Strap (L-BL-3) : Electronics

I've tried several different rope straps, and tons of leather.  Rope eventually digs into my neck, and as stated above, leather does not like the elements.  This small, PD strap is easily adjustable, and very comfortable to use all day.  Gets my vote.
