Olaf_ZG Posted May 30, 2023 Share #1 Posted May 30, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) My favorite FL is the 50mm. I had a old cron (v2 or v3 depends which wiki one reads), but sold it together with the m10. Now I have two wonderful 50’s: a chrom Lux A, and a sonnar. The first one is heavy: half a kilo, the second is great for portraits and a dreamy mood. So, what to use for a daily carry? The “heavy” lux, the dreamy sonnar? Or may be to add a planar or cron to keep things light? How many of us have triple FL’s?

TomB_tx Posted May 30, 2023 Share #2 Posted May 30, 2023 I haven't bothered to count how many 50s I have - but the one normally on my M10 is the Summarit f2.5 (when the 35 2.5 isn't on the camera).
lct Posted May 30, 2023 Share #3 Posted May 30, 2023 (edited) I don't count my 50s either but curiously enough, the ones i use the most are no Summilux, Summicron or PLanar anymore but my all-time favorite Elmar-M 50/2.8 and a new-to-me Nokton 50/1.5 SC v2. mediumformula Posted May 30, 2023 Share #5 Posted May 30, 2023 I second replacing the chrome brass 50 Lux with a regular black one. I also love the 50 Summarit 2.5/2.4 as a walk around lens when you don't need shallow depth of field.

spydrxx Posted May 30, 2023 Share #8 Posted May 30, 2023 Once I began using Barnacks in addition to my M2 a number of additional 50mm lenses made sense...I stopped counting them, but it is always nice to have a bunch with different characteristics to choose from.

I had the ZM Planar 50 and the ZM Sonnar and got rid of those two, replaced it w the Nokton.
darylgo Posted May 30, 2023 Share #10 Posted May 30, 2023 50 Apo and a diffusion filter for portraits if necessary. The apo is small and easy to carry. 1 hour ago, Olaf_ZG said: (note: having too many cameras bothers me, having too many lenses happily doesn’t bother me…) noted and agree 100% about lenses, bodies 50%.
Anthony Miller Posted May 30, 2023 Share #11 Posted May 30, 2023 I have several 50s at the moment. The f1.5 Summarit, an f3.5 Elmar and the f2 Summicron DR......and a Cooke Panchro on the way.......really tempted by the f2 Summar as well. Love the vintage glass

If I was in your position I would buy another Summicron and it would be either a v3, v4 or v5 depending on personal preferences. The Summicrons occupy the perfect middle-ground between the two lenses you already have; those mentioned have a mass which is roughly 40% that of the Summilux and have a rendering more 'neutral' in comparison to your Sonnar. My own personal favourite (FWIW) is the v4 - it is very small, very light, is wonderfully sharp and takes 39mm filters as well as the ubiquitous and superb 12585 hood - but all 50mm Summicrons are stellar performers so you can't really go wrong with any of them. Best of good fortune with your decision! Philip. Edited May 30, 2023 by pippy 3
earleygallery Posted May 30, 2023 Share #13 Posted May 30, 2023 I would use what you have. How much lighter would another lens be in reality? If you really want small/light then an Elmar or Skopar 50 would be worth a go.
mediumformula Posted May 31, 2023 Share #14 Posted May 31, 2023 Summicron V1 Collapsible is another one of my favorite 50s. 1
jakontil Posted May 31, 2023 Share #15 Posted May 31, 2023 50 have always been the menace, but if heft is a priority, definitely dont use brass.. i love brass and dont mind the heft, but i prefer the renderings on noct 1.2 as my daily.. since i stop down to get more clinical sharpness

Precisely my sentiment. I only own two M lenses, the 35mm and 50mm Summicron. For my style of photography that's enough variation. But I like it frugal and straight to the point—with character. Too many variables would blur my mind. The v4 comes with a tab but already has the upgraded optics of the v5.
irenedp Posted May 31, 2023 Share #17 Posted May 31, 2023 I just have one, and it is also the focal length -50 or its equivalent- I use most across cameras (Leica and not). I love my Summicron, which is a pretty old version non aspherical -bought third hand- but don't think that a lens determines anything. I don't shoot wide open unless it is convenient, and I value definition and lack of distortion above anything else. Cameras and lenses are tools. Amongst cameras, some are lighter, others give more depth of field, others a better color or higher images per second, or larger sizes, period. With lenses I work with essentially three focal lenses, and 80% of the time it's either a 50 or its equivalent in the larger formats, but I just care that the lens is optically as good as possible.

The summilux and sonnar are different enough from each other with creative options to cover most situations but every Leica M photographer should also have a summicron! The v5 Summicron is perfect for travel/daily use if the chrome summilux is too heavy and f1.4 is not needed.
