Is there a setting to have the latest posts appear at the top of the topic?

If you click on the blue spots (at least they are blue on my MacBook pro) to the left to the specific thread you are interested in it will take you to the latest unread post in that thread. Does that help?

You should try setting up your own activity stream by going to Activity > My activity streams > Create new stream. They are really useful. Later you can always go to this stream by clicking on the newspaper symbol at the top right.
