I recently bought a Summicron Rigid V2, serial number indicated 1958 date of manufacture, along with an M3.  The lens looked pretty good as far as optics were concerned, slight scratch on one of the inner elements only.  The contrast seemed a bit low on my first roll of developed film, I'm guessing that it could partly be due to my shooting into or near light sources.

I'm wondering if a hood would improve the contrast.  I slapped on a Leica UVa II filter the moment I bought the lens mainly for protection.  The seller also included a screw in Leica metal front cap.

I'm thinking the ITDOO or IROOA would be the most period correct hoods for my 1958 Summicron lens.  Would these hoods both work with my UV filter installed?  Will my screw in cap work as well with the hood installed/reversed?  Any concerns about the hoods scratching the lens or filter?  Any overriding technical reasons to choose an ITDOO or IROOA, or mainly personal preference?

Thanks for your help

ITDOO or IROOA CAN NOT work with the new UVA II

They can only work with old style E39 UVa (with inner black plastic rim),which were designed at the same time of production of summicron 50 RIGID .

A hood will help but this lens’s contrast should improve at f4 and above from wide open. If not then it could use a cleaning.
regarding the hood, the as supplied one is the  12585 which luckily for you fits the uva II filter that you have. The Len’s came with a metal slip on cap and a notched plastic hood cap which goes over the hood when the hood is reverse mounted on the  lens.

Yes I should try stopping down, I have been shooting indoors mostly at f2.

So my options are buy the 12585H to use with my UVA II, or buy the old filter with black inner rim and the ITDOO.  In either case would I need to buy another plastic hood cap to use when the hood is reversed?

This is my screw on cap by the way.

I no longer have this lens — had it from 1968 until I traded in recently – the lens hood (12585H) did come with a plastic hood cap, but I really never used it and it disappeared at some point. You can probably find the hood with or without the cap for a price! Buy the least expensive one even if it has no cap; the cap is engineered to self-remove so that you don't ever forget to remove it 😀 Your filter will provide adequate protection to the  front element.

12585 H is an excellent hood and the cap will fit both forwards and reversed.  You can also use it on a 35mm, unlike regular 12585.

This lens has less contrast at f2 for sure.  Are you processing your own film?  More development time, perhaps?  Labs routinely develop film for 10/15 pct less time than I would, particularly if you are shooting for a scan vs wet prints.

I don't know if there are actual differences between 12585 and 12585H hoods, besides engravings, but both can be used on 35mm lenses as far as my copies are concerned.
