roy salmon Posted April 6, 2023 Share #1 Posted April 6, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) Good day to you. I have a request from a contact who has found a Leica in his loft and is seeking some information. I have been able to trace some info: Case no 208551 which I believe is a 1936 IIIa. The lens reference 311656 which I believe is also 1936. Outside of the above information we are totally ignorant of the camera it's history and value. Can some kind person help us please. Thank you Roy Salmon

andybarton Posted April 6, 2023 Share #2 Posted April 6, 2023 We can't do valuations here, but I am sure that someone will chip in with some historical information about the camera.
Pintpot Posted April 6, 2023 Share #3 Posted April 6, 2023 This should start you off Roy, and there will be much more information within the forum. The very first Leica I owned was a 111a . As for value, eBay will give you some idea. Leica III - Wikipedia

As above, valuations aren't allowed here, but you can get some indication by looking at completed auctions on ebay, and the asking price at specialist dealers etc. Much depends on condition, though - functional and cosmetic issues are common with cameras of this vintage (especially if they have been stored in an attic). The year does appear to be 1936, and the lens should be a collapsible Summar (which you can check by reading the model name on its bezel). Both camera and lens are common models, and they might well have been supplied together - if you contact info@leica-camera.com with the serial numbers they may be able to tell you more about the delivery history. The Summar is often affected by haze, and some are unusable without professional cleaning at this point. Common camera issues include sticky or erratic shutters, damaged cloth shutter blinds, dim rangefinder images, dry mechanisms, and cracked 'vulcanite' rubber covering. All these can be fixed, but may add to the cost of a service that a camera of this vintage probably needs anyway, which can lower the sale price of the camera in its current condition. Declare all known issues if offering for sale.
