tom24 Posted April 1, 2023 Share #1 Posted April 1, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello everyone I read an interesting article about sharpening for print. Link here: https://creativepro.com/out-of-gamut-thoughts-a-sharpening-workflow/ What is your experience with sharpening for print? Is there any other rule of thumb for sharpening for a certain print size and resolution (eg 27x18 cm - 720 ppi)? And how do you understand what he means in the article when he states "The rule of thumb I use (one that has held up well under a good deal of empirical testing) is to aim for a sharpening halo that's somewhere between 1/50th and 1/100th of an inch in width — the thinking being that at normal viewing distances it's too small to see as an actual halo. It follows that output sharpening must be done at final output resolution." Does he mean the size of the radius in the high pass filter? Thank you. hansvons Posted April 1, 2023 Share #2 Posted April 1, 2023 Do your own testing. Chances are high that your taste is quite different from what the article suggests.
zeitz Posted April 2, 2023 Share #3 Posted April 2, 2023 (edited) The article is 20 years old. Sensors and printers have changed substantially. I can only print as large as 17" x 25.5" on a Canon iPF1000. The only sharpening I do is set Clarity to 25 in Camera Raw. As the previous post says, do your own testing for your equipment and paper.
