Interesting offering. It comes-in at almost exactly the same price-point as the TTA 28mm f5.6 but, clearly, has been designed to a very different philosophy.

Visually - to start with - the TTA has a very strong physical similarity to the Leica Summaron whereas this Mitakon looks more like a 'normal' 35mm / 50mm design.

The "Light Weight and Tiny" claim is also interesting. At 130g the Mitakon is 21g lighter than the TTA which weighs-in at (what is hardly a back-breaking) 151g yet the TTA is only 19mm long which is well under half the length of the Mitakon at 44mm. Both share the 51mm max. diameter and 37mm filter-thread.

The TTA features a 7 elements / 4 groups optical design (1 extra-low dispersion element: 2 high refraction index) and a 6-blade aperture whereas the Mitakon is an 8 / 7 design (1 extra-low dispersion) and a 5-blade aperture. I thought I had read - probably somewhere in the appropriate (and near-500 post) TTA 28/5.6 thread - that the TTA had one aspherical surface but could well be mistaken.

The Mitakon scores highly for those with Live-View / EVF in having a min. focus of just 0.35m. The TTA user has to make-do with the somewhat archaic 1.0m mfd common to numerous Leica lenses in the 'Dim and Distant'.

Intruigingly I found this schematic of the Mitakon on the www;

It would be great if there was someone here who could translate the text at the bottom of the illustration! If we can take it that the yellow element is the one extra-low dispersion lens (as mentioned in the specs) then what is the significance of the green- and blue-coloured (white = 'normal'?) elements?...

In comparison this is what the TTA looks like (are the first, third and fourth 'groups' meant to be cemented?);

Both lenses come with dedicated hoods - which is a nice touch - and both are available in Silver-Chrome or Black finish.

It will be very interesting to read a review from someone (who knows what they are talking about) with experience of using both lenses. I have the TTA and couldn't be happier with its performance - it really is extremely good - but I'm sure the nearer focussing of the Mitakon will raise interest with other photographers out there.

Thanks, sometimesmaybe, for posting the article!

Philip.

The weight difference between this lens and the TTA is due to the TTA being made out of brass.  Which makes it feel 'special'.

I have the TTA and frankly it is an excellent lens.  It also looks fantastic.  And that to me is the problem with this Mitakon.  Even if it is an excellent lens, it's kinda ugly.

It does win though if you u need a 28mm RF lens that can focus super close.  So you can emphasize that huge nose, tiny head look.

Doesn’t look “tiny” with the hood and based on the weight it’s aluminium.
IMHO the TTA f5.6 which apes the Summaron but renders/vignettes as a modern 28mm is far preferable (I have 2 copies…)

...when considered as a 28mm perhaps, Huss, but (with the greatest respect) here is a hastily-prep'd comparison (apologies in advance!) of the 28mm Mitakon with (my all-time favourite 50) the v4 50mm Summicron;

Are they really so very dfferent in the visual stakes?......:-k......or is the v4 50mm Summicron also considered to be "kinda ugly" by today's aesthetes?

Just a thought!......:)......

A valid point, Philip!  Perhaps I should say 'kinda ugly' in comparison to the TTA, which is a remarkably pretty lens.

It is like, well, I'm kinda ugly compared to Brad Pitt.  But by myself, in a pitch black, smoke filled room - I'm quite stunning!
