Brand new, Lumix LX100 ii $800 vs Leica Dlux 7 $1100

Recommended Posts

I’ve been on the fence with purchasing one of these models. If I purchase one I am leaning towards the Leica, but not absolutely decided yet.

will the Leica truly give me something $300 better? I don’t know, but I worry that if I got the Panasonic, I would always be kicking myself for not getting the Leica and thinking “what if?”

The biggest thing holding me back from getting either one is that I want to have them in my hand to test ergonomics. The panasonic has a small hand grip on the front, whereas Leica has a larger detachable handgrip. However, I’m not sure if the larger handgrip makes the camera noticeably less portable, which  is sort of the major reason to get a compact camera.

I also do suspect that there are picture differences between Leica and Panasonic since the software is different. I wish I could see side by side comparisons somewhere. Also, I am curious how well the two cameras connect.

In France it is now 899€ VAT inc for LX100 II and 1,350€ VAT inc. for D-Lux

Crazy how they both got so expensive despite their age.

Neither worth their respective price. The lens is quite disappointing. Just compare it against the Vario-Elmar-TL 18-56mm, there is no match.

The sensor itself (a cut down version of m4/3) is nothing to rave about : low res and bad high ISO performance). T, TL, TL2 or CL are way better.

Sadly Leica axed its awesome APS-C line-up with real Leica ergonomics and IQ in favour of their subpar Lumix rebadges with Panasonic UI & IQ.

If you want a Panasonic, just buy the real deal at cheaper price. No need to pretend that it is a Leica when it is not.

I do not want to encourage Leica to pursue their rebranding stunts. And will never buy any of them.

Funtionally I guess they are comparable, though not exactly the same.

Leica has the advantage of FOTO app, though I don't have good with FOTO at all. Leica also has the advanatge of resell price, if ever it is in the future plan.

I was told by an oversea camera store that Leica Dlux is easier to sell to female. It seems the outlook is much more attractive.  I think this might hit the point.

I have very satisfied pictures from even the 1/2.3 P&S. I also have XV, I know what XV is capable of. I do prefer XV. But that is not to discretit M43 sensor.

I chose the DLux7. The LX100 ii body is more bulky. I can get the naked DLux7 in a small jacket pocket.

or I can add the grip if I want it. More options and more svelte then the LX100ii.

Also for the DLux7 I can post pictures in the fujix, M43 forum and here, with the LX100ii I can't post pictures here :)

I prefer the buttons and design of the DLux7.

The second hand value is also higher, and will be higher for much longer, even after discontinuation, so long term you get more of your money back. Think of the difference as an investment up front (although a rather poor one ;) )

Lastly the DLux7 looks much nicer, and I like the red dot. There are different options for looks as well (black, silver and special editions).

You pays your money and you takes your choice ....

Of course you can, it has a Leica lens so you can post photos on the forum. Forum rules say

'Prerequisite for placing a photo is that it has been made with Leica equipment and/or has a strong relationship to a Leica subject. For the avoidance of doubt, this includes the use of Leica lenses on third party bodies, Leica lenses on Leica partner cameras (e.g. Panasonic) and the use of third party lenses on Leica bodies. In general, photographs taken without the use of Leica equipment are not permitted.'

You get two years warrantee with the Leica vs. one for the Panasonic, plus a version of Lightroom.  You have to decide the value to you of those.

The other thing to think about is what accessories you might want. I am NOT a Leica special edition person at all, but I must say some of the D-Lux special edition kits provide some very useful extras. I actually bought the James Bond one to return to the D-lux 7 due to the superb grippy leatherette they have used on this model, together with the grip and lens cap. The leather sling case I probably won’t use that much but it’s very nicely made.

you can get the Ricoh GR iii if you want a superb fixed lens pocket APS-C camera

but if you want zoom, there is no way of incorporating a large sensor in a pocket size camera (the G1X is not pocket size, and is only f2.8)

The Sony RX100s, Panasonic LXs/Leica D-Lux, Canon Gs are really the only game in down for pocket cameras ...

Despite what is written above, I find the lens excellent and picture quality great up to ISO 800. Since I am a film shooter I am happy to shoot night @ f1.7 and use ISO 1600 when necessary.

I went opposite, I downgraded to GRD III and first GRD. GRDIII is f1.9 lens. As film shooter and pusher up to 2021, I'm not afraid of GRD series grain @3200. Nothing scares me after last re-incarnation of TMAX3200. I even pushed it @12800.

LX100 II is a nice upgrade. The larger sensor makes a difference.

As far as Leica D Lux 7 vs LX 100 II, I'd go with the Panasonic for the reason I just mentioned. Otherwise the cameras are identical, except that the Panasonic has a built in grip that makes it easier to hold.

What Stuart mentioned about warranty periods is true, however, Panasonic repairs only take one year while Leica repairs take two. 😉

I found smearing effects i don't like in some Lx100-II files, at high isos mainly.

It's a shame this line is apparently due to be discontinued, or maybe it is already. These days I use my DL-109 as a backup and I still get good shots from it. The only issue is the zoom is beginning to fail so I was wondering whether to pick up a DL-7 as a replacement.

In addition if you pay with Amex or some other CC's they actually double the Warranty period.. D-Lux7 = 4 years..

I have always jumped for the Leica versions of certain cameras. The '7' will satisfy most of all your demands. (You can't expect a Mini to haul 4 + luggage in the same vein as say the current BMW 3 series) All in all, the '7' is a very pocketable camera with a nice zoom and excellent results.. Add one to your stable, you will not be disappointed..  🍷

Lumix LX100 II

I love the IQ from the larger sensor.
