The front of my V4 50mm Summicron  (s/n 3572241) unscrews.  I though this feature had been abandoned by the time the 4th version had arrived so, if this is a fault should I lock it with some appropriate adhesive?

Found this.

I always hold the base of a lens when mounting or dismounting.  Twisting the front element to mount or dismount a lens might loosen the front.  I personally would not use nail polish or other adhesive on the lens.  Hand tighten and you should be good, but I'd wait for others to give their advice.

BTW, I have a version 4 and I've never experienced any looseness.

Yes, maybe change it for a V5, although I might go even further and get a Summilux.....or does the Summilux  also have a front end that keeps unscrewing?  I had a 1983 version but sold it a long time ago so can't remember.  Getting into gadget acquisition syndrome here.  Return to reality with a quote from Edward Steichen: "No photographer is as good as the simplest camera".

The V5 has the same optics as the V4, sans focusing tab.  I'd figure out why the front element is getting loose after hand tightening.  Otherwise it might be like throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

A Summilux ASPH is another matter.  The finest lens I've ever used and I don't recall anyone having anything bad to say about it.  I'm sure if you twist the front element it too will loosen.  Hence, I determine why your current lens' front element is loosening.
