New M10-P, battery won’t charge

Morning all,

Well i finally took the plunge and bought a new M10-P (stunning black chrome!) for a good price from an authorised reseller. However, the battery won’t charge. I’ve had it charging for hours (green flashing light) with both lights starting to flash after about 4 hours.

The camera manufacture date is late 2019, so my guess is the battery has completely discharged with the camera sitting in the shop for years without it being charged.

Any advice on what I should do? What would you be asking from the dealer as they don’t appear to have any replacement batteries in stock.

It’s really frustrating as I’m on holiday and left the M240 back home, so no camera!

ILeicit,   Congratulations on your new M10-P.  IMO, your dealer should make a replacement battery exchange for your on return. Depending on where you are on holiday, perhaps there is another authorized Leica dealer close by or in the area you are visiting that you can buy another battery while on your trip.  I always carry 2 spare batteries when I am out in the field just in case of events as you experienced.  The M10 series IMO is a very reliable camera.  Batteries, can and do fail, especially with age and non-use.  Hope this helps.  r/ Mark

PS.  It could also be the charger.  Check to see if its hot. Normally the charger is slightly warm to the touch.  If the charger is hot, unplug it and do not use it, then seek an exchange for it.

As you are away from home on holidays..... Desperate action- 

 

1) place battery in a ziplock or airtight bag (if possible),  otherwise wrap in any plastic bag.

2) place in freezer for 24 hours (if possible), otherwise at least 12-15 hours.

3) remove battery from bag, and thaw the battery to room temperature for at least 12-18 hours before any attempt of charging it.

 

This worked for my old iPhone,    I have not tried the above steps on a Leica camera battery, and I'm sure Leica would not encourage such desperate steps....

Where are you on holiday? Can't you get one from the Internet delivered to your hotel?  Most shops offer 24 hour delivery, some even same-day.

You’re going to need 2 anyway. Buy a new one and have the shop replace this one later. But call them or tell them first (I’m guessing you already sent them a message). 

I’ve never bought a camera and not tested it at the shop before taking it home.

Replacement battery will be with me on Tuesday, but we leave Cape Town before then. None of the local dealers have stock!

Looks like it’ll be the iphone for snaps!

I unpacked the sealed camera box in the shop and wanted to test, but  there was no charge in the battery which I wasn’t too surprised as it was built and packed in 2019. 

Wouldn’t have been any different if it was delivered by mail. I’ll know for my next purchase!

Try another power cable for the charger. That solved a similar problem for me.

Try warming it up (the battery) and then put it in the charger. I have had occasions where a battery has over-discharged (yours may be in this state?). They won’t accept charge like this, but warming it up can raise the minimum voltage back into the recognised ‘acceptable’ range and then charge up normally. 

As you’re in CT, put it on a windowsill in the sun for an hour or two to rev it up!

I found mine had to be left on the charger overnight before it worked and it was fine thereafter.

Congrats on the M10-P. Frustrating about the battery but minor in the grand scheme…

Tried all of the above without success. Thankfully the dealer sent a replacement battery to in the post which I've charged and am now getting to grips with the M10. Feels like a substantial difference in size and feel and I'm loving it!

Good. 

Its a far far better camera than the M240 in the speed, and feel of it.
