Check serial number for theft?

I am looking to pull the trigger and buy an M10 on ebay. If the seller gives me the serial number, is there a way to check that it wasn't stolen, and is there anything else I can look up with the serial number?

there is a Possibility to register Leica Products on the website - if it is registered, then you couldn't register again.

If tpu can’t register the product, ask the website Support. They could tell you the product is stolen. They receved info about stolen products from the dealers and consumers.

You can check the web for possible sites that would have the serial number (as stolen), you can perhaps check the web for images with EXIFs containing serial number, but globally there is not really much you can do to find out...

There are some general sites with lists of stolen goods. It is strange no one came with the idea to set up a good one. On some sites I even found a list without ability to search for a serial. I am not going to read through a list of 30 pages just to find this out!

If I would have the time and energy I would set it up myself.

Ask the seller for the original receipt. If he cannot provide it or other proof of ownership (eg. Insurance papers), or the original packaging which carries the serial number, walk away.

If you send an email to Leica they will tell you how to register a camera or lens that was previously registered by another owner.

If it's too good of a deal to be 'true' then walk away. If the seller doesn't have an eBay history of selling things such as camera equipment, walk away. There are LOTS of used M10's out there for sale, so choose wisely.
