Lenses, other than the one on the camera, would best be carried in belt pouches, which are concealed by a substantial outer garment. Memory cards, which had already been used to capture images, would require special care, to conceal deeply, in something like a money belt, worn totally underneath the clothing. Insurance can “replace” lost gear, but images cannot be replaced. For that matter, I would sling the camera cross-body, and wear an outer garment over the strap. I already wear straps cross-body, anyway, for long-term comfort; due to a problematic upper spine, as anything larger than a pocket camera, that is worn directly in front, with the strap passing behind my neck, will soon become painful. My camera will hang near my hip, with the height depending upon the camera/lens being toted. In the event of a theft attempt, the camera can be protected, in the way an American footballer protects the ball, as he runs with it. In a shooting environment such as this, I would carry my extra gear in a Pacsafe anti theft daypack like this: https://pacsafe.com/collections/daypacks/products/venturesafe-15l-g3-anti-theft-daypack I have a 25 liter size Pacsafe day pack and it provides very good security for my gear in situations where sneak theft is a challenge that must be addressed. As for which lenses to take from your kit consisting of 21 SEM, 28 Summicron, 35 Summilux FLE, 50 Summilux BC, 90 Elmarit: I would probably go with the 21 SEM, 35 Summilux FLE and the 90 Elmarit. And possibly the 50 Summilux BC if the extra weight is not an issue. I have photographed music festivals a fair amount, and have found my 90 Summicron APO to be a life saver - the 90mm focal length lets me get good framing of the musicians without the need for excessive cropping in post while staying out of the way and not interfering with the concert.
Advertisement Posted February 8, 2023 Posted February 8, 2023 Hi Herr Barnack, Take a look here Lenses for French Quarter, New Orleans. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Studiopfp Posted February 8, 2023 Share #22 Posted February 8, 2023 If you haven't made your trip already, FYI, there is a group of Leica shooters that meet on Saturday mornings at Cafe Envie at the edge of the Quarter. http://www.cafeenvie.com/ Two of the regulars are Steve https://www.instagram.com/paulostevendiniz/ and Mike https://www.instagram.com/mikeleica/. Tell them Paulo said hello... Also, I would be very careful in New Orleans - crime is a serious problem. And the Quarter is not what is use to be... the city has "cleaned it up" so it's lost a lot of it's appeal at least at night. I would head over to The Marigny to shoot at night.. Have fun! A few blocks off of the well-trodden path may bring you to places you don't really want to document (at least not on your vacation time). New Orleans suffers from many ills--not the least being too many guns and too much ingrained poverty. Situation awareness should be every photographer's sixth sense. Use it. I was just there for four days and your advice is spot on…especially for a tourist who is unfamiliar with the street by street situation there.
