Looking at all 4 lenses together, while nothing scientific, it really amazes me how great these first tries that Leica had at creating a 35mm and 50mm lenses were. You cannot see almost any difference in the center, and really the main improvement the Summilux offers VS the Elmar are the better coatings and 2.5 extra stops of light. That obviously comes at the expense of 2x or 3x the weight and cost.

Interesting comparison. The other expense is likely also a somewhat "compromised" optical design, in order to enable the Summiluxes to perform at an "acceptable" level across the aperture range. 2.5 stops is a huge difference in optical terms - and there's only so much you can do without size, weight and cost becoming prohibitive (well beyond 2x or 3x). Therefore, optical design too has to pay its price to speed. This is why it is a science (art?) of compromise...

I am kind of surprised by how good the center resolving power of my Elmar 35/3.5 (1948) is with M10R.

Our Elmars are from the same year by the way, so I believe yours should also have blue coating.

Leica II with 1932 uncoated nickel Elmar 5cm. XP2 in Diafine. Probably wide open, as it was getting pretty dark.
