Popular Post nodrog Posted January 13, 2023 Popular Post Share #1 Posted January 13, 2023 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) These 1940s'-built, shed-like structures are still homes today. While cycling in Adachi-ku I spotted these picturesquely-patinated structures near Kosuge Prison, famous as the incarceration centre for, among others, Shoko Asahara (executed) and Carlos Gohn (escaped). The area is well-known as a dirt-cheap place for accommodation. My bicycle attracted the attention of a neighbourhood obā-chan ("I'm 82", she said) whom I chatted to for a while. Seems she is one of the original residents, having been there since her youth. She likes the place because of the size, but, unfortunately, declined to have her portrait taken. This kind of dwelling is an increasing rarity in Tokyo, as older, larger, building plots like this are much sought after for development into more efficient, but much smaller modern homes. hepcat Posted January 13, 2023 Share #2 Posted January 13, 2023 The eclectic mix of 1940s and modern architecture in these is stunning.
HandofSand Posted January 13, 2023 Share #3 Posted January 13, 2023 I love these corrugated iron structures. Seen them on the margins of Hong Kong and Taipei, too. Little workshops, garages, a food stall, residential, even shrines. Not sure they were all up to code, so better not to draw too much attention, we don't want the authorities or, gulp, a developer, getting any ideas 😉
stephan54 Posted January 13, 2023 Share #4 Posted January 13, 2023 Some streets in Koto look very similar. Interesting contrast with the more touristy parts of town.

StS Posted January 14, 2023 Share #6 Posted January 14, 2023 Very good reportage off the beaten path in Tokyo. "Cheap accomodation" in Tokyo might be an oxymoron Stefan
