Hello,
I would like to know if it is possible to adapt Leica R lenses on Canon film cameras?
More generally: on which brand of film cameras (other than Leica) is it possible to mount Leica R lenses?
Thank you!

The flange distance on Leica R is 47mm.  Most other film SLR cameras have a flange distance from 45mm to 46.5mm which means that there would only be 1.5mm max for an adapter (presuming you want to focus to infinity.)  That short distance, plus the flange size pretty much precludes both the R series lenses being mounted on any other film SLR, and also, having the longest film-to-flange distance precludes any other camera's lenses from being adapted to the R series.  That's why there are so many inexpensive R bodies for sale now.  The lenses are being snapped up for mirrorless and cine use and there is a glut of really nice film bodies.

However that said it would appear that the Canon EF mount at 44mm flange distance can be adapted to use the R lenses and maintain infinity focus.

The Canon EF mount can be used with a simple adapter on any of their EF mount Film or Digital bodies  however some R lenses have a rear shroud that will hit the Mirror.

Good Luck.

Ken.

Keep in mind there can also be mirror clearance issues with Canon (D)SLRs and some lenses - eg. the 19mm Elmarit-R v2.

People would work around it by either modifying the rear of the lens by removing the metal ring around the rear element, or taking a Demtel tool to grind back the bottom of the reflex mirror to provide sufficient clearance.😗

Of course it’s not an issue now with mirrorless digital bodies.

Actually, I had an adapter for Leica R lenses on a Canon FD mount body. It was handmade in China, as I recall. The downside of it was that you couldn't get infinity focus until f/8, which was basically a DOF capture. I sold it given its limited functionality.
