Hello, all. I awhile back I purchased a vintage Canon 50mm f/1.8 LTM lens and have been wanting to mount an Orange filter on it for BW shots. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to find any that fit. I think it’s 40ish in diameter but none of my filters will fit.

I’ve attached some photos for identification purposes. If anyone can help me on this issue, I would greatly appreciate it.

Here’s another angle of the lens.

40mm.

The Canon filters came in different styles. The original (AFAIK) for these was a flat-fronted (no front thread) ring over which the dedicated (S-42) cinch-clip-fitting hood slipped. Later Canon joined the rest of the world in using screw-in filters which accepted screw-in hoods. The original filters are slim-line and more scarce than the later version.

These are superb lenses. Edge definition at widest apertures is not up to current APO ASPH FLE standards, of course, but otherwise? Nowhere near as 'Vintage' in the rendering stakes as one might imagine for a 70-y-o optical design. VERY sharp in the centre at all apertures and sharpness area spreads across the frame - as expected - when stopped down. IMX more contrasty than Leitz offerings from the same era.

I do use mine very often with my M Monochrom for which it is a near perfect companion.

Philip.

EDIT : Flat-fronted 40mm Filter and case;

S-42 Clip-on Hood and Leather Case (which has a separate partition, inside, to hold the filter-case);

These Canon lenses take a 40mm filter, which is not a common size, I have a B&W yellow. But you can get a cheap Chinese 40 to 40.5mm adaptor so that you can use the common 40.5mm filters and hoods.

I have Marumi 40mm screw on filters in both UV and yellow that go with mine. I agree with the comments, these are very nice lenses.

Edit, I've just had a look on that famous auction site and 40mm filters do seen to be very scarce except for UV/protection filters. I did however spot there are a large number of new push-on filters made for Jupiter lenses in 40mm, but whether that is inside or outside diameter I don't know.

As far as I can tell, lenses like the Jupiter-8 have a 40.5mm x 0.5mm thread, with a 42mm outer diameter for push-on accessories.

Edit: I've seen filterfind.net mentioned a few times as a source of odd-sized filters, though they don't have orange in 40mm at the moment. They suggest 42mm slip-on as an alternative for Canon rangefinder lenses (none in orange right now, though they do have yellow), so perhaps those push-on filters for Jupiters will work after all?
