JHarvey Posted December 27, 2022 Share #1 Posted December 27, 2022 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) How often do you turn around and literally see the finished image before you even lift the camera to your eye? My wife has had a pretty tough year, we had to say goodbye to our two 13 year old fur babies, she said goodbye to her father and a cousin as well. Waiting on the rest of the family to arrive for Christmas lunch at her mom's house I had been taking pics of the Christmas tree, and some of the decorations and when I turned to ask them to come pose by the tree I saw this image. They were discussing the things that only a mother and daughter can talk about. I was afraid to speak or ask them to do anything, I got off 3 shots hoping that I would get at least 1 good shot and I did. How often do you have this type of "turn around and there it is scenario" happen to you? Welcome, dear visitor! JoshuaRothman Posted January 7, 2023 Share #4 Posted January 7, 2023 A beautiful photo and story—and happy new year to you and yours! This happens to me often. My main subject is my family, and I've learned to always have the camera nearby. Most of my favorite photos are totally candid and capture interactions or moments that unfold in just seconds. I'm never sure if using an M helps me capture more of those moments or less of them, compared to an autofocus camera. But I love the experience of seeing something happen—or, better yet, anticipating that it's about to happen—finding the range, and then getting the shot. Incidentally, I think your wonderful picture is a great example of how the meaning of a photo isn't always fully visible in the photo. That picture will probably mean more to you than it would to a stranger who happens to see it and doesn't know the story behind it. A lot of my favorite personal photos have meanings that will only be obvious inside our family. Sometimes I print out a copy and write down some of the story on the back. Or even make a note of it in the metadata in Lightroom!
