Looking for a 50mm with similar rendering than a 35mm Summilux Pre-Asph V2

Not sure if this question have been asked.

I am looking for a 50mm lens to pair with my 35mm Summilux Pre-Asph V2 (Early transition version with infinity interlock). Looking for the typical glow that the 35 lux will produce at wide open and becomes sharper when stepping down.

I have tried a Nokkor s.c. 5cm f1.4 LTM. This lens is quite sharp when stepped down but wide opened, would not render the some amount of glow the 35 Lux will produce on the same scenes. It also flares more seriously that the 35 Lux.

Any suggestion/comment will be very much appreciated.

An easy way to add glow to the Nikkor is the use of a Softar filter.  It’s not easy to match glow perfectly, various strengths are available.  There is one version available new from B+W, otherwise eBay is your friend but sizes tend to be limited.

Perhaps my favorite 50mm glow lens, and cheap by Leica standards, but not rangefinder coupled, rather large, but not dense or heavy like the the noctilux f1 is the ver. 1 Summilux-R, including the two variations in body design, e55.  For me it matches the Pre-asph well.  Second would be the Noctilux F1, but the CA is difficult to tame occasionally.  Third would be the Summilux ver. 1 from 1959-1961.  The ver. 2 could work also with the B+W filter.

Try the Voigtländer Heliar Classic 50/1.5 https://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/323521-rumor-new-heliar-classic-50mm-f15-vm/

Not possible to "match" this "faulty when conceived" (the creator allowed some aberrations remaining to "give" this special "look"),

try these maybe one can do : Summilux 50mm, Summarit 1.5/50, Noctilux 1/50, Canon LTM 1.2/50, and SLR 1.2, 1.4/50/55 lenses from Leitz or Nikon, Canon, Olympus, etc.

Good luck.

Summarit 50mm f1.5 / Summicron 50mm collapsible / Elmar 50mm f2.8 / Summilux 50mm V1 / V2 / Summar 5cm f2 / Summarit 5cm f2

I’d say these cover all your vintage options when it comes to 50s that render closely to the pre-asph lux 35. Of course I’m not including the noctilux due to price / size but that could be a really good option as well.

Summilux 50/1.4 v1 springs to mind but i have no experience with it. I have both Summilux 50/1.4 v2 and v3 but none of then shows significant glow and they have very little flare contrary to your 35/1.4 v2. Oddly enough perhaps the 50 i'm using the most together with my 35/1.4 v2 is a ZM Sonnar 50/1.5. Gentle rendering at full aperture, plenty sharp with no harshness above, but no significant glow and very little flare so i doubt it will feed your needs but JFI.

I just ordered this lens exactly for this reason. I really think it will match the Summilux 35 very well, especially on film. This lens is inexpensive so its worth a try.

Interesting. My Summilux-M 50mm v2 (1983) does have distinct glow at wide apertures. I made a comparison of the 35 and 50 in this post and several subsequent ones. The lighting is not ideal for showing the glow, but it is there (zoom in on the rocks), and I have seen it more strongly when the sun has been out. My conclusion was that the 50 produced similar but not quite as much of the same effect as the 35.

Did you find significant glow on anything but out of focus subjects? Just curious as it is something i can't seem to get with any of my 50mm lenses so far. Just to show what i mean (CV 35/1.4 SC v2 on digital CL):

Thank you all for the valuable inputs and suggestions.

After doing some more readings and study, I think I will give the 50 Lux V2 and even the V1 a try out.

I also read an in depth reviews on the Voigtlander 5/1.5 Heliar classic VM on other forum. It is interested that two posters stated the Nikkor s.c. 5Cm 1.4 LTM renders similar to this lens.

For comparision purpose, the following two sets of images are taken with my M10-R with Leica 35 lux pre-asph V2 and a Nikkor s.c. 5Cm 1.4 LTM wide open. I use a B+W UVa filter on each lens. The modern multi-costed filter did a great job to improve the contrast of this war time Nippon Kogaku Tokyo product.

First image: 35mm Lux; second image: 5cm 1.4 on each set.

For my Germany 35:1.4 v2 , I find the 50:1.4 v3 a perfect match.  Both early 1990s updates/coatings.   So I would imagine that with an earlier v2 such as you have, the 50:1.4 v2 will be a fantastic pairing.

I have the 50 summilux as my only 50mm lens now and I have to say that it definitely glows less than the 35 summilux wide open, but it still does glow (just a tiny bit) and it looks great especially on B&W. I would also say that from f2.8 they are both quite sharp, yet delicate, with the 50mm being slightly sharper to my eyes or with more pop (but that's probably more to due with the actual focal length difference than anything else).

I find them to be great matches, and that's why my only two lenses now are the 50 summilux v2 (crhome) and the steel rim reissue (waiting for its arrival still hehe).

I think the lens that comes close is the Voigtlander 50/1.5 Heliar Classic. It shows similar glow wide open but not at close distance and especially at MFD where it's surprisingly better corrected for SA. At mid-distance, it behaves like the 35/1.4 pre-asph but with a narrow field of view. For those who prefer 50mm and want that look, it's a great choice imo.

Here is a sample:

I'll see if I can get some examples one way or the other today. Other things may get in the way (e.g. 6 g/children requiring attention - aside from the children and in-laws).
