I woke up the other day and remembered how much I disliked my classic M6 and all the reasons why I sold it. So I called the Leica store and canceled my pre-order.

Instead, I decided to order an MP thinking it would take a few months for it to arrive. To my great surprise, the store had one waiting to be picked up by a customer who, for whatever reason, wasn't willing or able to pick it up for the foreseeable future. So I walked out of the store with a brand new BP MP and I'm stoked.

Congrats!  Check that pressure plate before you use it!

What didn't you like about the old M6 vs the MP?  The new M6 is basically the MP but w different wind and rewind.

Yup, Leica lost the chance to sell me a new M6. I would’ve bought it earlier had they been available but now I’m taking myself off the list. I will spend my money with Sekonic, Ilford, and Kodak instead.

Thanks. What’s there to check exactly?

In no particular order: the red dot, branding, frame advance lever, viewfinder, tinny feel overall. I know most of those issues are going to be sorted out with the new M6 but I’m glad I went for the MP anyway.

yeah, if you prefer no red dot etc MP is the way to go.

To check the pressure plate (and the rest of the drivetrain) for potential film scratching, take a sacrificial undeveloped roll of film and fire a few shots through the camera.  Then check the film strip to see if there are any scratches.  If none - you're good.  No need to dev the film, especially since is it much easier to see scratches on the undeveloped opaque film.

It's unimaginable to me that a new Leica scratches film, let alone several new M6 and MP models. What the hell is going on? As Huss describes, run a strip of film through the camera and look for scratches. Seems like a rational final inspection.

Youtube videos seem to be Leica's greatest product.  Jeez!

Have you had any of the issues with your new M6 that have been reported in other threads on this forum?  Namely, film scratches or shutter issues? Just curious how widespread these issues might be.

HI There

No scratching - no shutter issues either.

All seems fine to me

It doesn’t have a button rewind and the internals are the same as the M6. None of these issues are M6 issues, they all exist on the MP too and have done so for years

I’m assuming he means the rewind knob instead of crank.

Nice!  So looking forward to get mine back.

is it weird that even though Leica said six weeks before I get it back, I check twice a day in hope I get lucky?

:)

Got mine back today.  Will test soon.

Sacrifice a cheap roll of film if you have that and just run it through the camera. Advance until the last frame and then rewind, but stop before the film goes into the canister. No need to take photos and get the film developed. Undeveloped film will also clearly show scratches, if there are any. But you probably know all of this.

Here with my first post to confirm that Camtec in Montréal is getting at least one M6 next week. Shouldn't be there very long though, because they will be shipping out to me in Toronto when it arrives.

I hope it's not a scratcher!

Did they say what they’ve done?

They said the cleaned and adjusted the pressure plate.  Which fixed diddly squat as it still scratches the film.  I am.... upset.

Seriously? That's unbelievable.
