Because I've wondered this too, I sent the question to Leica to get an answer once and for all. In less than 10 minutes, I got this answer:

Dear Mr. Vikne,

Neither the M10-D nor the M-D have a rear display.
While I personally think, they should have been called M10-ND and M-ND respectively, the D stands for "no display".

Why did you even for a minute have doubt in my honest, truthful and Leica-sourced post here?😄 I am always speaking the truth, even when I am not...

You wrote "It's a bit strange that no one seems to accept the response from Leica Customer Care but continues to search for an answer" and you did the same lol...

Leica photographers are curious creatures, they all want to get the D.

Probably because you didn't provide any credible source. 😉

You only believe things when you have scientific proof?

Well I always thought it stood for 'Datsch' but perhaps I am a little biased ... 😅

I am so glad it's not 'Digital' as I half suspected. I'm sticking with "Displaylos" and I don't even care that a google search of that word only brings up this thread! Perhaps it's not a German word in common parlance ...

I wouldn't personally be keen on "M10-ND and M-ND" as it implies something lacking. I prefer 'Display-free' or 'Screen-free' which emphasises freedom from menus and distractions.

The German manuals for the M240 etc refer to the screen as "Monitor" so perhaps 'Monitorfrei' would have been good, but of course MM was already taken ...

As the -Ds are the ultimate Wesentliche machines, M-W and M10-W and hopefully M11-W would be just fine with me ... 😃

I agree that no screen is no shortcoming, it's a feature!

It's Leica's way of trolling us, since we buy anything Leica throw at us. Someone at Leica is laughing hard reading this thread. Because "D" actually means.......

Well, MD in Roman Numerals stands for 1000+500 ie 1500 which is pretty much exactly how many M-D's we think were made ...

And in M10-D  it's 'minus 500' which means that it .should. have cost 500 less than and M10 as it had no screen, but hey, it's Leica etc etc.
