Any news on new Leica SL lenses?

Things have gone pretty quiet on the launching of new SL lenses from Leica (see below). There was supposed to be a 21mm and 24mm coming out in 2020. I imagine Covid screwed up plans. But now that things have move on, does anyone have any updates on what might be in the pipeline? Is there any chance a new Summilux lens will be added to the line-up? Or more insanely a Noctilux-SL?

Dear Sohail,

The 21mm has already been announced for March. Based on the Word on the Street and from Leica Rumors the 100-400 is coming with the Rendering being of Leica Quality while keeping the Weight Low (I used the 24-70 for 2 Shots before going back to my M Glass its more a Video Lens I would say for the fixed Aperture), and a Leica 1.4X Magnifier for the 90-280 and 100-400. Sadly, the 24mm is scrapped. Also Word on the Street is Long lenses will only be made for the SL since not enough are being moved (90-135 Discontinued with no Plans for new Ones yet, You never know). Those are just "Rumors" so "Don't" save up for any of those.

P.S. Silver SL "might" be coming as a Limited Release.

Sincerely,

Nostradamus.

I’m not sure I follow. Can you share your information source that the 21 has been announced for March and the 24 has been scrapped? Are these announcements or rumours?

thanks.

I had an R apo 1.4x on my R 280 and 400 2.8’s back in the day and it was a nice converter.

I’m just waiting to see if their converter is for sigma quality and those designed lenses (at lower cost points) or actually going to be matched to the Leica designed 90-280 and higher cost point…

Hello All,

Sorry for my Late Reply (A Couple of Lunar Missions, and planning/conducting a Workshop with Matt Osborne drained Me).

At the Very Least this is the Information I got from my Sources (not Rumors, I Just wanted to get People excited about the Future of the L System).

The 21mm has been Confirmed. (News now so its out there)

The 100-400mm is in the Works. (IQ Color more matching the 90-280mm due to Feedback)

The Teleconverter will work on existing and Upcoming Zooms/Telephoto Primes. (One has been confirmed to Me but out of respect of my Source I cant share It, and It is not the One thats been circulating as a Rumor)

The 24mm may not be scrapped but no production effort is put in at the Moment.

The Silver SL2 been confirmed to me from multiple Trust Worthy Sources.

My apologies for causing any confusion I will not be sharing any inside Source Information other than what I had Said (I do not look at Leica Rumors as a Source as I am a Collector and have been for the Past 10 Years and made a lot of Friends. In Fact I ask my People First if It is ok to Share. I would love nothing more than a 24 Prime (got the Elmar and Lux) to Replace my Zeiss 25mm ZM hence I keep asking the Subsidiaries hearing the same thing.

Best Regards,

Santos (Omar B.K).

Kim,   I was told by a Leica store owner the 24 might well be dropped.  You are right about the M 24s.  Both dropped and being too close plus lackluster sales.  Personally, I prefer a SL24 over a SL21.  But one never knows what Leica will do; Germans love surprise.  I was recently told Leica Australia was shown a demo SL21.  The SL21 is due out next quarter.  r/ Mark

Personally the 21mm is to wide for every day, the 28mm is often no wide enough. 24mm is a sweet spot.

I think the 24M is challenging because of the missing framelines , but I don't think it is the same on SL cameras.  On the other hand I want to see faster lenses from Leica, Let's get started with a line of Summilux.

On the SL lineup, I can see 24 mm being a challenge for Leica to sell because it’s covered by so many zooms. Just about every single wide-angle and standard zoom, except for the Sigma 28-70, has 24 mm covered. In some ways, it does speak to the usefulness of the 24 mm focal length and I’m a huge fan of 24 mm, both on M and SL systems. I’m one of those crazies that bought a 24 elmar-m and it’s such an under appreciated gem. Definitely, the sharpest of all the M primes I own.

With all that said, the APO Summicron SL line up shouldn’t necessarily compete with zooms as the reason to shoot them is the unique look. But I can see how there may be a psychological barrier for some people to spend $6-7k for a focal length that, at least for me, is covered by at least 4 native L-mount lenses in my kit.

It's not just the zooms, Sigma has already multiple primes in that focal lenght, the F3.5 version, the F2 version and the F1.4 version, and all three are really good to excellent.

You can buy all three for less than half the price of a hypotetical Leica. So, squeezed between the 21mm and the 28mm on one side, and 3 Sigma primes + the zooms on the other side, it may be a very hard sell for Leica.

Or, perhaps, the SL lenses are not selling well to justify a 24mm

Edit: there's also the Panasonic 24mm F1.8

When I got the SL2, the plan was to get the 21 SL and  either the 50 or 75SL to compliment the Q2. I have since gone ahead with the the sigma 20/2, and because I couldn’t decide between the 50 or 75, decided to go with the Sigma 65/2, and see whether I ended up wishing for something a little wider or longer. After using the Sigma’s, I’m reconsidering. The 65/2 is an excellent lens, I might not be able to appreciate the upgrade to an SL. While the sigma 20/2 is a fine lens, the 21SL should, relatively, be a more significant improvement, so the 21 could be my first SL lens, plus it is probably my favourite focal length.
