When I purchased my Steel Rim recently the round hood was actually omitted from the box, I got in touch with customer support of the store I used and after a while of communication between me, them and Leica I just got word they sent a replacement hood to me. But now I am curious to find out if I will receive this alleged "redesigned" hood or the previous iteration, hope to receive it within a few days so monitoring this thread to hopefully learn if I can identify the version I get.

I just received another one, of what looks exactly the same, of the 12487 clip on hoods. I now have three. (Apologies)I don’t have much issue with the vignetting, nor what was needed to stop it, but to me I now have three clip-on hoods that look exactly the same…Will the difference be hardly noticeable to naked eye, or should I see a change in what should be the revised design?

I am in the US and just got my first replacement hood a few days ago.  As others have stated, the "new" hood" 12486 is exactly the same as the one initially shipped with the lens and was a mistake.  I just received a new email from Leica NJ indicating a a second new hood has been sent.  For your stated model # 12487, this should be the corrected one, hopefully.

12487 is the Ollux type hood enclosed with the SR reissue along with the vignetting hood 12486.

I’ve been coming around to the idea of trading in my 35 FLE toward a Steel Rim. But I wonder if I’d be better off waiting another six months (or longer?) so that my lens will come with the redesigned hood right in the box. I’m not in a rush…. I’ve also been hoping against hope to find a used Steel Rim somewhere.

It seems like a great lens, but I don’t want to get involved with Leica customer service if I don’t have to…..

I just received my new round hood in the mail. Same part number, but different design to prevent vignetting.

It's a beautiful lens and you will have several lens hoods from Leica that can be used elsewhere 🙂

It appears to be a very simple redesign, not a task that should take the time Leica did to deliver it.

In 50 years all the defective hoods might be worth a fortune. Time to put them in a vault and drive up prices 😂

It does seem like a simple re-design, but the manufacturing part might have been the bottleneck. Compared to cheap Ebay hoods this thing is a work of art. All the labels on it are recessed (stamped?) and then filled with white paint. There is a matte finish on the inside of the hood and a different paint (anodized?) finish everywhere else. The machining looks really high quality. I assume each one is CNC'ed from a block of metal, but I really don't know.

You're still in the original hood mix up  - ie they're sending you identical 12487 clip on hoods. See above for the new 12486 hood that's shorter to prevent the vignetting issue.

It's Leica!!!  I'm sending 'em to the auction houses.  Will the current stock of reissues be purchased for this reason, throw the lens away, keep the hood.

Thank you, I tried not to cast Leica in more than a slightly negative light, I'll be more careful in my posts after all they deserve great credit for what they do and provide great equipment for all to enjoy.

This is now quite comical - I've just received my 2nd 12487 clip on hood so now I have 3!!!! In years to come you'll only get maximum value for your SR if you have the full 3 set Steel Rim limited edition!!!

I just received my hood, I didn't request a new one because of the vignetting but because the round one was missing from the box when I purchased the lens. For some reason they sent me both though, so now I have another OLLUX as well. As I didn't have a round one to compare my new one with I can't be 100% certain which version I got, but based on the image posted by @Crem I have the one on the right which is less tall, and I presume that is the newer "redesign"?

Correct the shorter hood is the new redesigned hood. It should prevent vignetting, but I haven't tested it.

If you have registered purchase of the lens on the website. Do they send the replacement hood automatically, or do you have to request it?

That's mixed depending on whether you're in the US or Europe, irrespective of that I'd just email them chasing it up!

A hood that screws into a filter is a non-starter for me. Cheap, cheap, cheap-looking compared to the look and feel of the 12504 hood from my v2. The 12504 is only annoying to use if you have a damaged one that's difficult to unscrew. And owning one or more extra hoods lets you switch between filters with a fast pinch of the filter release tabs.

The same thing can be said about the 50 Lux Black Chrome, and I did enjoy using it without the hood. But there is something lost here with both lenses that could have been perfect if they had only given a little more thought to the designs.

I was happy the way things turned out with the 50 BC, because Leica replaced a hood which had been dropped and bent out of shape. No questions asked.

My recently-delivered 2022 Steel Rim was packaged with what appears to be the original (2022) threaded metal hood, rather than the redesigned hood that does not vignette. The good news is that the OLLUX-like plastic hood is not what I consider to be too loose.

Thank you Al.........I got an email from Leica too this morning but they only mentioned the one vented hood, are they in fact replacing both the vented screw-in one and the gravity loving OLLUX type hood too?

I found a way to use the 12487(OLLUX type) lens hood and filter at the same time, using an E43 filter instead of an E46 filter, the E43 filter fits perfectly inside the 12487 hood. I tried only KENKO and HAKUBA E43 filters, so other filters may be too tight or too loose. If you use it as if you use a series filter, you can use both the 12487 and the lens filter. The trick is to push the filter slowly and straight into the hood from the inside. No problems with corner vinneting as far as I have tried. Give it a try...

Thank you once again for this.

I tried with a cheap K&F 43mm filter (the only next day delivery 43mm filter I found in Dubai..) but unfortunately it didn't work as the outer diameter it is too large.

Can you please share the exact code of the Kenko filter that worked for you?
