I'm just back from a visit to Kruger National Park in South Africa.  My first go at a safari and it was thrilling.  I took a Leica SL 90-280 and a Hasselblad X1D II 45P.  I also brought along a Sigma 16-28 but chose to use the medium format X1D II  (rather than the Sigma 16-28) for the safari portion of the trip.

The 90-280 was fine for 80+ percentage of telephoto shots.  On occasion, it would have been nice to have brought along a longer focal length, but JaapV and Michaeli suggested less rather than more gear, and they were absolutely correct. The simplicity along with African air travel weight concerns was a limitation. The animals get pretty close to the vehicles at Kruger so it worked  out well, as did the Hasselblad, which I thought captured the colors of the African landscape so beautifully.

Having the medium format system was a great complement, though certainly the Sigma 16-28 would have worked well too.  As mentioned, since the animals get close , I also thought that maybe the 90mm length on the SL was the better alternative to the Sigma 150-600.  I'm not sure on that latter point.

Nonetheless, I thought to start an open thread for those wanting to post photos from their own safari trips.  For me, it was the trip of a lifetime, and if you're considering one, don't hesitate!  In my case, a hobbyist's photographer's dream!

On our way back to the lodge the next day, we came across a pack of hyenas devouring the remains of the dead giraffe.  Hyenas consume just about anything left over include the bones.  There was plenty of noise, snarling, and gnarling as they engaged.

It was rare to spot a leopard.

Going down to the lake for a drink and then coming around it to the backside and past a land cruiser.

Those are all pretty spectacular, Rob! Wonderful photos of an amazing adventure. You brought camera gear that really captured your experience. All terrific, but I have to say that the way the Hasselblad renders the blues and browns of Africa is especially powerful and evocative.

I am advised that posting photos from the X1D II is against the LF rules and some of the posts have accordingly been removed.  My intention was to show comparative renderings, but will abide going forward.

Rob

You should have shot with a film Hasselblad so that you could have posted them on the "I like Film" thread.  We're a wild bunch over there, and anything goes! 🙂
