Hello, I have a Monochrom typ246, UK purchased and I’m interested in a m lens for it. It’s a coded “C” Japanese market release lens. My question is would there be any issues if I bought it and used it on the uk body? I think the only issue, maybe, having to manually input lens name in the menu?? Sorry for my ignorance and I would appreciate someone letting me know please 🙂 Thank you. All the best

If it is a M mount "C" lens you can use it with absolutely no problems. There were some rumors about regarding incompatibility but I have been using a Summicron 40 "C" (which is not Japanese market release btw) on my digital M240 and M10-R without any problems whatsoever.

Hi, many thanks for replying. It’s a apo 90mm f2 Summicron asph

Hello, M246 can accept M mount lenses or other mounts with right adapter.

I  don't know what "C" lenses are, so if it's M mount, you can use it with your M246, maybe with LV.

What lens exactly ?

Thank you very much for replying, it’s a 90mm apo f2 Summicron asph-m. Apologies if my wording confused you, it was a bit of a scribble. Japanese market releases are coded “C”, I was wondering about the c coded lenses on my uk bought 246 body and compatibility (although I didn’t use that word previously) 🙂

Just curious, where does this "C" appear? Is it part of the serial number? Never heard about this.

It’s on the box where the bar code etc is, with a lager text “C” then the usual code number. As the earlier poster mentioned, there were rumours of incompatibility, but they were unfounded 🙂

Leica and Minolta made a 'cheap' camera, the CL, small and light, and they put in a short rangefinder (that is: the distance between the viewing frame and the small opening with the rangefinder spot) and also made some 'cheap' lenses that still had to perform on the CL. Ah yes, and they made the lens choice different, not having a 50mm frameline but a forty mm one. Also "not to cannibalize" the main line of expensive camera's.

NOW: the good news is, they made some very very good lenses that even would give good results on the 'crappy' (my word) body, that did not allow very precise focussing at all.

The 40mm-C F2 like you might pertain to outperforms the 35mm Summicrons (I have two) on the M240 and M10-R even. Outperforms meaning it is of a stellar quality, sharp, good sharpness and great wide open performance. The field curvature is a little going to infinity wide open, that is the only comment I make, but you bever notice.

The 28mm is great too on the new bodies (though it is prone to developing haze). Shooting with the sun it can't be improved upon by the Elmarits. Superior colour.

There is ONE big problem with these lenses: they do not increase in value. 😪

& They even have a cost of ownership: a CLA every 10-15 years. They cannot stand rain or moist (such as shooting outside while skiing / going inside - the kind of reckless things I do).

my 2¢ or I should say, 2 pence.

I've had all the film CL "C" series lenses (and, over the years, three different Leica CLs...). They all work great ... The last series M-Rokkor 40mm f/2, OE with the Minolta CLE, performs just a hair better than the Summicron-C 40mm f/2 due to the later multicoating it had (earlier lenses were singlecoated), but the Summicron's build quality was better. I still use an M-Rokkor 90mm f/4 (exactly the same lens as the Elmar-C 90mm f/4 other than the front bezel and filter threads, made on the same assembly line in Germany) with my M4-2, M10-M, and digital CL ... A lovely lens, small and light, and precise! It's made many very satisfying photos for me.

The notion of their incompatibility was a suspicion of their focusing accuracy that came from the short-baseline rangefinder mechanism in the film CL. I don't know precisely what difference this amounted to in the lenses, but I've tested my CL series lenses on a host of different M bodies and never found much to speak of in terms of focusing accuracy falloff. Flatness of field, etc ... eh? slight differences but no more than between other slightly different lens series.

Tending Apart
Leica M10 Minochrom + M-Rokkor 90mm f/4 + Green filter
ISO 1600 @ f/9.5 @ 1/125

The M-Rokkor 90mm f/4 (and Elmar-C 90mm f/4) show edge and corner fall-off in both illumination and resolution when wide open, which is nearly eliminated by f/8 and completely eliminated by f/11. Some diffraction degradation is noticeable at f/16 and more at f/22, so I normally use f/8 to f/11 as my aperture setting if I'm looking for clean rendering across the FoV with it.

I've never seen the original boxes for any of these lenses so have no idea whether there was a C code on the UPC coding. :)

Umm ... what makes you think the lens you're looking at was a 'coded "C" Japanese market release' lens?
