Looks like sister company Leitz cine made the work for close focusing M lenses.

Every Summilux-M from 21 to 90mm plus Noctilux-M 50mm.
Later Super-Elmar-M 18mm and APO-Telyt-M 135mm will get the same treatment soon.

I guess that Summilux-M 35mm asph is only the second one of a long list of updated M lenses
closer focusing distance is really awesome

cine housings seem to achieve a closer focusing distance than original M lenses body can achieve.

For example new Summilux-M 35mm can only reach 40 cm instead of 36 cm inside the Hugo variant.

I am not sure if it will make any sense to relaunch Noctilux-M 1,25/75mm with its 85 cm minimum distance to not even reach the 75 cm of Hugo's 75mm.

Same for Summilux-M 1,5/90mm at 100 cm vs 85 cm for the Leitz Cine variant.

However a 50cm minimum focusing for Noctilux-M 0,95/50mm can be absolutely awesome instead of the 100 cm mark.

Cine housings can be much much larger and often weigh in, as shown above, at well over a kilogram. Without size constraints floating elements is a lot easier than with M.

even the cheap ones that don't cover full frame or have floating elements.

I am just saying that Cine housing seems to be able to squeeze a little bit shorter focusing distance than the same lens formulae inside M lens body.
Summilux-M 35mm 40cm vs Hugo 35mm T1.5 36cm mfd

Every Summilux or Noctilux converted to Hugo housings have already floating elements in their original format.

It is juste interesting to see how close future updated M optics can reach.

Sadly for longer focal length it won’t change much.

FYI : APO-Summicron-R 90mm can reach 70cm, beating the 85cm of Hugo 90mm.
Summilux-R 80mm were already able to the same 75cm as Hugo 75mm.

Those are reflex lenses with shorter MFD than M ones since the sixties. The Elmarit-R 35/2.8 v1 had a 0.3m MFD for instance and the Super-Angulon-R 21/4 could go down to 0.2m. M lenses can now be used in LV mode though so their MFD tend to shorten as well. The first M lens to follow that trend was the WATE (0.5m) if memory serves but even in the film days, the Super-Angulon 21/3.4 could go down to 0.4m. Not sure Leicas's planning to do the same on all M lenses though. Elpro close-up lenses that were made for R lenses are designed for both M and TL lenses at present (link).

using ELPRO or Macro-adapter-M is a pain in the ass. I hated them and sold them without looking back.

As close as possible focusing distance is the way to go.

A new Macro-Elmarit-M 90mm with build in 1:2 macro ability would be awesome. Make it 1: would be even awesomer.
