Careful means leaving no marks 😁. You can for example use a piece of rigid plastic to move the position of the right hand 'spring' further upwards. Using a screwdriver will result in the marks shown.

I have used macro elmar 90 v1 for 3 years and then exchanged with v2 which I still have in use quite frequently, particular when traveling. With v2 I like the bigger aperture ring which is much more handy compared to  the one of v1. Also I bought macro adapter with v2, never had the googles or viewfinder of v1.

Macro Elmar 90 for me is a quite handy lens to have in my jacket for quick change to a tele with my M10P. Howevee, I am using 50 mm mist often, followed by wide angles like 35 or 28. So 90 mm is for special situations like graphical structure, details etc. so a compact size is quite important for me.

Overall, I prefer smaller lenses with my M10 P although I have a couple of Summiluxes which I usually use for planned shootings in fixed settings where size and weight do not matter (vs traveling).

Also I am using the hood of the 2.8/50 for the macro 90 as this hood is small, sufficient and offers protection (metal hood, well fixed with the lens).

The only issue I had with the 9ü Macro a couple of times is back focus. It has been fixed at Wetzlar but a very exact measuring with the Meßsucher is always important to get the razor sharp images this lens is able to provide. So being 100% in focus is sometimes quite a challenge particular in fast situations and/or short distances up to 20 m. There are  a few mm on the distance ring of the lens who  make a big difference! In older lenses like Elmarit 2.8/90 there is much more movement needed to turnthe distance ring which makes it slower but also easier to find the perfect focus.Quite often I am using EVF with this lens on my M10P and in particular when having the macro adapter in place (+tripod).

Overall this is a great lense which I can recommend 100%. It is compact, delivers great results, has high quality mechanics plus macro functionality as an add-on. Hope it helps!

I have the v1 (a rare silver chrome version) and likewise use the 50 Elmar hood.

I have the goggled adapter but mainly use the lens as a 'travel' 90 in lieu of my weighty chrome 90 Summicron. Collapsed it takes almost no room in the bag (or pocket!) and gives a super sharp occasional longer focal length.

(It's also stellar on the T-L adapter on my TL2 as an effective pocket 135mm..)

Hi Roland. Does the newest version of this lens come 6-bit? And does one need the angle finder that seems popular with this set up?
Thank you,
Mark

I owned the newer version which I bought used from Leica Miami.  I loved it. It was sharp as a tack, I have the adaptor so I could enjoy wonderful close-ups, it was tiny and fit in my pocket so it went everywhere.  And that is the problem. I had it in my left side jacket pocket, got into my car and drove off. I have never seen the lens since. It was small enough to slip from my jacket pocket and out the door before I closed it. Being quite deaf I didn't heat it hit the ground and off I went. A very sad discovery when I got home. Of course I went back to the scene but it was gone.  The end of a very nice love affair and as most affairs are, an expensive one!  I would buy one again if I found one in great shape. I think it is a brilliant lens. I used it on my M10 and M mono(type 246).

Hope you had replacement insurance.

Hi Mark, thanks for your question. Version 2 is the current version and comes with 6bit coding. Depending on the construction year the previous v1 also should have 6bit. I did not own angle finder  # 12531 that came with v1 at that time. However, with v2 and live view (w M240, M10, M11) I love to use the electronic viewfinders EVF. EVF gives you a quite convenient  handling, a relaxed position (in consequence less blurring/shaking), extraordinary perspectives and on top it helps you to focus very accurate (using the electronic enlarger). So I am using EVF quite often with the Macro Elmar (not only in macro mode!) but never owned/used the previous angle finder with M8 and M9 at this time. I used Version 1 of the lens mainly as tele not as macro because live view was not available w M8/M9 which made macro photography quite challenging. The angle finder looks nice and I guess was useful to some extend before live view came up and has been replaced with by the much higher functionality of the EVF.

However, you do not need to have an angle finder or an EVF for this lens. In the end it is about convenience.

Best, Roland

Thank you again, Roland. So, I could use the version 1 on an M10-P with the newer M-macro adapter ?

Hi,

You can use the macro adapter with any M lens, not just the 90.

The current Macro-Adapter-M v2 sans goggles (14652) can indeed work with the Macro-Elmar-M 90/4 v1 and any other M lens but only in LV mode for lack of focus cam on the adapter. For a use in RF mode, the macro adapter v1 with goggles (14409) is necessary.

Yes, that is correct. The lower the focal length the closer you have to be towards your subject. 90 mm + makro adapter gives you a certain distance to rhe subject which is in many cases preferred, from 60 cm to approx. 10 cm. With a 50 mm lens + makro adapter it starts with approx  15 cm. So distance  camera to subject is 15 cm or closer which also produces higher enlargement of the subject. If you use the adapter with a wide angle lens like 28 or 21 mm the working distance becomes quite (too?) small. The good thing with Elmar 99 mm v1 or v2 and makro adaptor:   if you collapse the lens you can use the whole distance range until  infinite. Advantage:  you do not need to detach the makro adaptor if you change your distances to the subject e.g. towards 1, 3 or 5 meters. However, this works only with the electronic viewfinder EVF not with the mechanical rangefinder.

Depends on lenses i guess. i would say from 20cm to 1m as far as my lenses are concerned including collapsible ones like Elmar-M 50/2.8 at about 1m here in collapsed position (link).

Correct, collapsed Elmar 50 starts at approx. 1m.

All other(non-collapsible) 50 mm`s like Summicron or Summilux  or non-collapsed Elmar 50 mm start at approx. 0.15 m and closer.

Also just measured Summicron 35 mm with Macro-Adapter: working distance starts at 5 cm (0.05 m) or closer which shows the limits of the makro adapter w different focal lengths whereas Macro Elmar can be used from infinity continuously down to 0.3 m (30 cm) by combining non-collapsed and collapsed positions.   I assume this is feasible only with Elmar 90 mm.

Would be interesting to experience  macro adapter with new close focus lenses Apo 2.0 35 and Summilux 35!

Too much talk, not enough photos to show what this lens can do 🙂

All shots from yesterday (Alps, South Tirol / Italy) with Leica M10P, Macro Elmarit 90 mm v2 + Macro Adapter, f16, tripod, distance approx 0.5 m, EVF, ISO 200, auto WB, out of camera/no edits, downloaded as JPG in Leica Foto App (DNGs will be edited later in C1).

Works great at a distance too.  This was snapped last week in very early morning light, handheld, at 1/45 sec. f4.8.

And, beautiful tonal range.  The first morning sun was starting to stream through the trees in these images.

The lens is light and well-balanced, so it is pleasant to carry around on your neck on an M body while hiking.

These were at f16, with a tripod.  Focused as close as it would go without the adapter.
