M11 does not see the SD card when formatted ...

Hi~ (almost the first post....)

Right after SD card format, I see SD card of course. But without taking a picture, if I turn off the camera and on... I see no SD card (if I press menu, at the top left of the LCD display, it says only internal memory....)

However, at this moment, if I take a picture, it is recorded in the SD card and the SD card is shown, normally.

Is this normal or not?

Thanks in advance.

What ist Your setting in storage options?

On my camera the SD symbol is shown at SD only and SD = IN (others I did not try).

My option is SD and Internal after SD.  If I set SD only, the same problem exists.

I checked on my M11. It behaves differenly to yours. I do not understand what your camera does.

Sorry for my poor English.

I insert 128G SD card - format - press menu button to display status screen - in the upper left side of the status screen it reads 'sd+in 1k free/169GB' or so, that means I have 64GB of internal memory and 128GB of SD memory.....

Without taking any picture, if I turn off the camera and back to on (once or several times, but almost always) and press menu button to check the available memory, it reads 'in .../64GB' or so, that means I have internal memory only, not SD card.

If I ignore this and simply take a picture, the camera record the picture in my SD card and the status screen shows it normally.

In summary, the camera looks OK but if I format and (not take a picture)turn off and on again, the status screen shows wrong information (as if no SD card is inserted)

I did the same like You. My camera reads 173 GB - before and after turning off and on again.

But I have in mind that a very similar problem was posted in another thread (not especially dedicated to the problem), but I could not find it.

I imagine that there is a bug somwhere: My M11 with 64GB card inserted shows "IN=SD 505 free / 283GB" which is probably wrong. Or when I switch to SD only then it shows "SD 505 free / 59.4 free" which is more likely correct.

I must say that I never looked at that information 🤧

Did you try to format your card with SD Memory Card Formatter (link)?
Fixes all my card issues generally but i have no experience with yours.

Yes. I did format with SD memory card formatter.

I'll keep watching to clarify my problem.

Thanks~

I had the same issue you have...

I don't have a solution, but when the card does not show up I will take it out and reinsert and it works.

Some cards are giving me occasionally more issues then others. try a different card!

I did contact support for it and they are testing incompatible cards, but if the problem will not change in the next few firmware updates they told me to send in camera for inspection.

Thanks for your advice.  I tried Sony and sandisk. Same issue....

As you have mentioned if I reinsert it works, but the issue happen again if the camera is turn off and on.

In any case, if I take a picture  everything goes normally after that. So I'll wait and see for a while, as you said.

Thanks again.

You mean Sandisk UHS-I or UHS-II? I tried a Sony Tough that failed and reverted to Sandisk UHS-I with zero problem since then.

Sony xc2 128G, Transcend xc1 64G, Sandisk hc1 extreme pro 32G.... all three have similar symptom.

(( remember .... insert-format-off-on and check. ))

I see the same thing. It is likely a UI bug in the firmware.
M11 sees the card (saves photos) but does not show the SD card in the UI until the first image is taken.
I have not encountered that issue because I rarely format but delete instead.

I'm experiencing the exact same issue regardless of the capacity or brand of SD card I use. This issue only started after the latest firmware update (v. 1.5.0.1) a few weeks ago.

Like you, I found the work around to be taking in image immediately after formatting the card before turning the camera off. I can even delete the image before turning the camera off and the problem goes away until the next time I format a card. This issue is repeatable 100% of the time, so it must be a firmware issue.

I just spoke to my Leica dealer (SoHo, NYC) and they confirmed that the M11s are experience SD card issues.

I called the Leica service center, but had to leave a message. They have not called me back yet and, frankly, I don't expect them to do so. Leica service is appalling.

For now, I have a 100% reliable workaround as I just described. Hopefully, a new firmware update with fix the problem soon.

The card access works correctly, but the UI does not recognize the SD card and does not offer the option to format it. However, the images are stored on the SD card as expected.
The issue is eliminated if you delete images instead of formatting the card. There is no benefit to formatting once you have done it the first time.

Playing around some more, I confirmed that after I format a card and turn off and on the camera, the SD card and expected total storage capacity is not recognized. After taking a single image, the total storage capacity then includes both internal and SD card combined. I can delete the image just taken and everything acts as normal. Thankfully, turning the camera off and then on, the SD card is still recognized properly.

Moral of the story until Leica fixes this issue with a firmware update is to just delete images after offloading them instead of formatting the card.

The reason I have always formatted my cards in camera is that I have owned other brands which I use interchangeably. Now, I mostly shoot with my M11, but I also own an SL2. I don't shoot the SL2 that often, but from now on, I will have SD cards dedicated to each camera and delete images on the M11 rather than format the card.

Thanks everyone for getting clarity on this issue. Now it's up to Leica to fix the firmware.
