I have a few ‘brass’ Ms, and briefly used an M6.  Like my Ms,  I was impressed by how nice it felt to use. And that’s with me knowing It had zinc in it!

Yes the only reason i was hunting a brass one was about avoiding for sure the risk of future zinc corrosion bubble.  But there were other things that I liked about the TTL at the time also. If not, an M6 that had not bubbled after 30 years would’ve also been fine !

I don’t think it’s a matter of preference for any particular material over another. There’s a rabid desire for black paint that Leica can charge so much more for one as in the M10R BP. Older black paint lenses have gone through the roof in prices. If the new camera is brass then more likely there will be a BP option. Users don’t care about zinc vs brass but they probably aren’t the ones willing to pay top dollar for a new cosmetic M6 anyway.

I was looking for used MPs on eBay and saw so many silver chrome version and not many BP ones. Same with online camera shops. Chrome MP bodies not as desirable as BP even though both are brass.

If Leica can sell a version of the M10-R with glossy black paint that's intended to wear down to the brass sooner rather than later, how about an 'M6-Z' with zinc that is primed to bubble in months, and look like it has a hammertone finish in a couple of years?

The hammertone finish for me is the sexiest finish Leica ever offered.  I wonder why they never did it again?  I've seen repaints attempting it (Shueido etc) and while they look ok, not even close to Leica's finish.

Challenger to what/who?  Leica moved on from that in the 1950s..  And my gorgeous real 1F only costs $500.

People noticed that focus aids on a camera can be useful.

Challenger in the space of all-metal, mechanical, high-end interchangeable lens film cameras. They may start with that simple barnack, then move on to rangefinders.

Thanks.

So my idea was not so stupid and easily doable.

Well I go ahead, then ...let's dream 😉.

Beside aluminium top plate, I suggest wind-on lever with plastic articulate tip, slanted rewind crank ...

To be short, new kind of M4-2 with aluminium top, and clear contrasty VF with why not  ... options for x0.58 (M4-5), 0.72 (M4-7) and 0.85 (M4-8).

To be modern and not costing much, the customer can choose rich colors leatherette 🍎🍏🍋🧣 ( free option or few dollars/Euros more ), with black as Standard ( no not my cup of T ? ).

Oh I'm dreaming of new colored "à la carte" M4-2 ...

Would that be doable without the baseplate too?

Start with a camera that no-one wants, then move onto one that people do?

I have a feeling that if it would have corroded/bubbled, it would have done it by now seeing the last one made was 20 years ago!

Interestingly I have only seen the bubbles on silver M6s.  Not on the black ones.

Here is a M6 TTL I owned. Storage didn't matter, they just appeared:

Leica are priming the market in anticipation

Interestingly they head a section 'The Beauty of Imperfection' which says to me the new camera will be a joint collaboration with Holga.

They lost me at 'artisanal'. And let's hope we're not really going back to 'celluloid film'!

It's probably no coincidence that they're featuring a photographer who uses an M6...
