David_miller70 Posted September 3, 2022 Author Share #21 Posted September 3, 2022 Advertisement (gone after registration) Ok, many thanks all. So my new Mac arrives today. I decided to go for an all singing/dancing super fast 16” MacBook Pro with M1 max chip, 64 gb of RAM and a 4 TB SSD hard drive. That should future proof me for a while even if I buy a Q2 (3)!!! My next question is what is the best way to get all of my photo’s from my old Mac mini across, without loosing any quality. Most of the files are from my Fuji XT2 so are a decent size but there are some big ones from my M10-R, and I want them not to be compressed in any way. They are all backed up on the iCloud so I could just download them but are they then the same as if they had come off the camera or a smaller lower quality file? Best, David

Best, David If you already have the files on your current Mac Mini and want to carry over everything to the new MacBook Pro, simply make a full Time Machine backup on the Mini. Then when you setup the McBook, you have the option of restoring from a Time Machine backup. This is how I’ve migrated several of my Macs over the past decade. It should transfer everything, including your apps and data.

Best, David That configuration is more than sufficient for Q2 DNGs. I have the MBP 16" M1 Pro 32GB 4TB with an external display and I've never heard the fan kick on. You can use Migration Assistant to move everything from your old Mac. I've used it for all my past migrations of both work and personal Macs. AndreasG Posted September 3, 2022 Share #24 Posted September 3, 2022 I wonder which size of RAM you eventually would buy if you need to process video clips?
luetz Posted September 3, 2022 Share #25 Posted September 3, 2022 iMac 24 inch with M1 chip , 16GB Ram and 2 TB SSD drive. Do a lot of editing in LR Classic on DNG images. Love the speed and display.

I don't do video. If I did I would have opted for the Max to get the extra encoder and doubled memory bandwidth. When deciding on how much memory to get I looked at the usage of my typical workload* on my 16" Intel MBP vs that same workload on an M1 I have for work. I decided that I should be able to get by with 32GB with Apple Si whereas I needed 64GB on the Intel. Turns out that 32GB has been more than sufficient so far. * Mac Photos, Raw Power, Pixelmator Pro, News, Messages, Mail, Notes, Reminders, multiple Safari windows w/ a couple dozen tabs each, etc.
