Do I Need an SL2-S?

I hear you, but as I said, I have only a 50mm Summicron IV and I'm not planning to get any new M lenses - I much prefer the Zeiss.

Anyway....I had a great morning in the Store today - impeccable service. I brought my lens and my laptop and I was trying the camera as throughly as I could - luckily, the guy liaising with me had good knowledge of the filming side of Leica so he could set everything I ask for.
Really impressed with the out-of-the-camera look...great image stabilisation and ISO capabilities way superior than Sony. 12K the image is still clean whilst Sony has a tiny bit of grain.

They had this second hand model for a great price, the camera looks immaculate, strap unwrapped etc. I just couldn't resist so I pulled the trigger, here I am on a L system now!

I'm really looking forward to put the camera under heavy work, both with videos and photos. I finally experienced the manual focusing system which as it was mentioned before it's very fluid. If you try to mount an M lens on a Sony body it makes you wanna throw the camera on the floor.
Leica really nailed that part.

I got a cheap adapter from Amazon for now, I will have a look for a used Leica converter in the next few weeks.

One option is to get your Summicron coded. Leica offers this service at a fixed price, which includes a basic service and calibration, but most Leica specialists will do this for a small additional fee (on top of a regular CLA).

I use a ZM Planar 50 with a helicoid adapter. This allows me to focus closer on the SL, approximately down-to 40cm. My adapter is from Hawks factory, which is a one-man shop in Taipei, but there are other options available from Kipon and 7Artisans.

Definitely give it a try. My production partner is a Sony guy. A7III and a couple A6400’s in the cabinet. The SL2S has no problem hanging with those cameras on video, and I’d take the SL2S over any of the sonys for photos. Been using with my M glass and it’s a magical combo as I’m sure you’ve heard people say. I bought my kit “open box” used (it was brand new) for $5400. Body and the Leica 24-70 2.8, 2 years of warranty bla bla. I could’ve spent that much on a song rig with the G master 24-70, but at that point - why? I think this camera is really Leica making a choice to compete with the other commercial cameras on the market. Performance is as good or better and the price is close enough.

If you don't mind me asking where were you able to find the "open box"? I'm in the USA. Thanks in advance.

This was secured through a camera shop in my area who regularly gets stuff like this. They're at Cardinalcameraused.com - Ive done a few deals with them in the past and they're always willing to negotiate as well as trade.

Congrats. Amazing camera with M lenses. The L mount glass is also incredible, but very large. I initially bought a TT artisans adapter, and while the function was fine, I didn't like the way it fit. It felt a hair too tight on the mount. I ended up picking up a mint in the box Leica adapter for $300, an insane price for an adapter but I know that it focuses accurately at infinity and I like that it writes the lens data in the files. Looks good too.

Also (I think I'm going crazy) when Im in photo mode, I can see only A (auto) or M (manual) exposure mode, I don't see any P or S? Am I missing something?

With an M lens like your 50 Summicron P and S modes are not available.  Both modes require the camera to control the aperture which is not possible with an M lens.

Really nice jpegs straight out of the camera by the way. Really really nice.

So far I'm loving the camera...I'm still getting a bit lost with all the functions (i'm coming from an M246) but I will get around it. The fact you can simply long-press a button to assign a custom functionality is the smartest thing I've seen in a digital camera, all other brands should take notes.

Quite heavy to carry on the neck or shoulder for long period but it is what it is. Battery life could be better.
Looking for a nice strap now, the Leica one is quite comfy but looks a bit dated imo.

Agreed, the weight of the camera with the L mount zooms is a handful. I used my rig for an event recently and the Leica strap just doesn’t work. Ordered a Peak Design Leash as it will float better on the strap lugs. Tremendous camera though. Color rendering and handling of highlights blows my other cameras out of the water. As a still camera I’m not sure you can get better output from many other bodies on the market. Autofocus isn’t great, but manually focusing is more effective for me most of the time anyway.

Works for me, although I attach second anchor to provided small base plate so that lens lays flat against hip when using strap over shoulder or cross body.

I went to shoot my first concert yesterday with SL2-S + 50mm Summicron V4 - really enjoyed every shots!
Compared with an M is as enjoyable although much more missed in terms of focusing/framing. Compared to Sony....well, it's not even comparable: SL2-S is much more enjoyable and the amount of 'keeper' is actually higher. The autofocus in Sony may seems fast and everything but (at least with live photographer) it often lock on the microphone or hand (even though it's on Face AF).
Really really positive experience and absolutely chuffed with my purchase!

Are you saying you missed more shots in terms of focusing/framing with the SL? If so, I’m sure it’s just practice, I daresay many people often explain how the SL can facilitate accurate focusing compared to their Ms

Oh no sorry my bad! Quite the opposite! Almost every shot was in focus! Really impressed how easy is to manually focus...
