Trying to decide which to keep of the two…

My main setup is 50 Summilux ASPH + 28 Elmarit ASPH v 2 - and I find myself going for the 28 over the 35 or 40, unless I really need the extra stop. On the M10 I find the Ultron colors a little hyped, and the 40 has some “Vintage charm” that is either desirable or blah depending on the lighting…

Kind of torn but need to slim down the collection a bit. I also have the 50 Elmar-M for a lightweight option…

Keep the Leica 40mm because it’s a Leica and offers something different despite the incorrect framelines etc and will increase in value?

keep the Ultron as a crazy value for rare occasions when I want a 35?

or sell both and the Elmarit and get the 28mm Summicron?

just curious about opinions here. Thanks for reading and opining!

IMHO figure out which you use most or are likely to use most, and make a decision based on that. Personally I've learned the hard way that selling a Leica lens, unless it is never used, is a poor choice.

If it is for just to keep, which I read in OP, always keep Leitz, Leica made.

I had 40 and 28, but sold. If I don't use lenses, cameras, I sell them. Even with Leica, Leitz label on them.

As for rendering, where are different versions of 35 Ultrons. I had 35 1.7 ASPH LTM and its rendering was on vintage side of Leitz with good amount of sharpness and more importantly micro-contract which some of CV lenses have none (like CV CS 35 2.5).

But it was no focus tab lens. I switched to 35 2.5 Summarit-M and its rendering is improved version of 35 1.7 Ultron LTM.

Also, 35 1.7 ASPH LTM is known for non repairable fogging.

And 50 2.8 M is one of the best 50 lenses I ever had for rendering. If I would be a 50 person, this will be the lens for me to keep for my SBOOI, which is the only accurate and 1:1 VF I'm aware of. While 40 is odd focal length which works great with 40 framelines (not really 50)  in cameras where they squeezed 28 frame lines. Which are from M4-P to M9. Don't know if LCAG was able to make 50mm framelines as 50, not 40 after M9.

I own both lenses. Different character indeed. The 40/2 is a lens from the seventies while the Ultron is a modern lens that will match your 50/1.4 asph and 28/2.8 asph better.  The 40/2 is one of my favorite lenses for portraits though.

I have different versions of both lenses, in that I have the 40/2 m-Rokkor and the 35 Ultron V2. I suppose I might find myself in this situation one day. It depends if you prefer to have another asph lens to match with what you have, or a lens to give you something different. I think both lenses are easily obtained if you decide to re-acquire them at some point but perhaps the Ultron would be easier. Besides that, I would keep the 40mm for a lightweight one lens kit. The 28 and 50 make for another nice combo.

Yeah - you are all just verifying my initial impulse - the 40mm was my first Leica lens so there’s that too! And just had a DAG cla and better than when I bought it. Perhaps it was a silly question. Wanted to hear from Ultron fans, some of the “Summicron Killer” talk - but in my use the 40mm is pretty great - vintage look wide open but stopped down pretttty dang sharp. Thanks for any continued thoughts.

I had both, shooting extensively back then with both lens, while others have stated, the ultron is more a modern rendering lens, which basically almost every manufacturer can make such, the 40mm f2 is more special in a way to capture light

I had thr minolta glass back then but i believe they were of the same standard while the earlier version flares more

mFD was .8 compared to closer on the ultron
