SirBlunder Posted July 13, 2022 Share #1  Posted July 13, 2022 Advertisement (gone after registration) E.g. when in AF mode, I can jiggle the actual focus ring piece (not any other part, including the part with the "AF" on it) back and forth slightly. When in MF mode, the focus ring (again, just the actual ring with the grip lines in it) has the same maybe 1mm in which it can freely go back and forth without changing the focus. Anybody else?
Advertisement Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 Hi SirBlunder, Take a look here Is anybody else's Q2 focus ring not.. 100% tight?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
clasami Posted July 13, 2022 Share #2 Â Posted July 13, 2022 There is a very small amount of movement possible when in AF mode (I'd say less than a millimeter). When in MF, any movement of the ring results in focus change no matter how tiny.
Philip Matzigkeit Posted August 2, 2022 Share #3  Posted August 2, 2022 It is somewhat reassuring that this issue is not unique to my camera. I brought it along on my current family expedition within the Philippines because my VLux 3 has failed. (VLux so light for travel and I love the zoom whereas the Q can only be manipulated after the fact.). I've had to rely on my i-phone for travel pictures during my 3 week Philippine tour. Not bad photos on i-phone in their thumbnail incarnations, but I doubt they're adequate for enlargement. The remarkable Zoom of the VLux or its Lumix cousin made for quick framing of distant images. This is another thread, the VLux will no longer read my card and I was told it could not be repaired. My older Lumix had to same problem. Yes, but back to the focus issues with the Q2: The Auto focus feature resulted in mostly blurred images and the target never stayed still the focus bounced back and forth. I was successful in using manual focus but guessed distances and that was not always spot on. Then remarkably, auto focus would work for a few shots and then later not. Bah! A second issue is that contacts on my memory card often will not read and pictures "FAIL TO WRITE " or I get "SD card error." I bought the Delkin card which worked for a good long time but now is quirky also. Think I'll stick with Kodak instamatic from now on.

However, your post is not related to the OP issue. The little jiggle present when the focusing ring is moved to AF does not influence focusing or operation. Maybe you could ask for advice on focusing with Q2 in a separate thread.
LexS Posted August 3, 2022 Share #5 Â Posted August 3, 2022 My Q2 focus ring has no play, works as new, 2.5 yrs old. But I must say that I did not use the Q2 very much (Corona).

While in autofocus, it would occasionally drift into manual focus even though it didn't slide past the engagement point of manual focus. When it did this drift it would blur the picture. Same as you the target would pass back and forth. If I had enlarge focus assist on I could clearly see the bounce from 1 to 6x magnification. If I went into manual focus I could get focus spot on. Also if I slightly turned the focus ring slightly toward autofocus I could get the autofocus to engage. Otherwise I would randomly loose many pictures. I sent it back to Leica in New Jersey and they tightened something so that the play in the focus went away.

Sounds like the lock/click-in mechanism between AF and MF was faulty. To be clear, that camera (which has since been replaced; that one had dust issues out of the box, so I returned it and got another copy) did work perfectly despite the "slack" in the focus ring. The new one I got also has (slightly less, but still a little bit of) slack to the focus ring, but I believe it's normal. Very very tiny amount that does not affect the use of the camera at all.

There is (most likely) a pin that locks the focus ring in place when in AF mode. That mechanical lock will always have a tiny amount of play (less than a mm). No impact on how AF functions and certainly not something to be worried about. The amount of play may even differ slightly between cameras.
