M2 with M3 Frame Counter

Sherry Krauter (Golden Touch) sold it to me.  She had acquired the inventory of a camera tech who was deceased.  This was his personal camera.  When she went through it for the CLA, she saw that the internals are M3, top plate and VF are M2.  She could not figure out how the frame counter came to be.  The other mystery was how the original owner got the top plate in the first place.  She said Leica did not give them out unless they were given a top plate for exchange.  I've known Sherry for around 30 years (!), just happened to be visiting her when she was working on this camera.  I really wasn't planning on getting another M body, but I loved the feature set.

New Old Stock top-plates being sold aren't that uncommon. Several years ago I bought one from a very well-known London dealership for my M2 and I didn't have to hand over the original as part of the deal. Having a 'no serial number' blank top-plate engraved with the camera's original serial number, however, could not be executed unless the original plate was sawn in half / otherwise destroyed.

Is the serial number of analog Leicas only on the top plate?

Or did Leitz Camera engrave the serial number inside he camera, too? Where exactly, or did the location vary?

Alpa in Switzerland did this for most of their models and Carl Zeiss for Contarex.
