Old Celtic tribes settled here (from 600 BC), in the Middle Ages the low mountain range was called "Buchonia".

People felled many trees here to build and use the land for agriculture.

The volcanic origin of the Rhön has led to heavy quarrying of basalt for roads. Abandoned basalt mining areas became beautiful little bodies of water:

Peat was mined in large quantities in the moors. Today they are being renatured.

The Rhön is also home to many wild plants, some of which were used as medicinal herbs.

The interaction of man and nature can be very sustainable and beneficial.
But our nature is endangered. We humans have started to destroy our habitats.
How much longer can we take pictures like this?

p.s. thank you for the info about your corner of the Planet. How about a post above « our corner of the planet» and how we, as individuals, are doing our best to take care of it.
