There is a new lens in town.
This design variant of the Summicron-M 28 f/2 ASPH. features a matte black finish and light green engravings. It has an integrated lens hood which extends via quick twist.
The EU price is €4,300.00, just 50 euros more than the regular black anodized version.

Leica says „ This is due to its recalculated optical design, which almost completely eliminates the astigmatic differences in the image field caused by the cover glass of the sensor to ensure excellent image quality from corner to corner in every picture.

But this seems to apply to the „normal“ 28 Summicron as well.

The optical performance should thus be the same? 🤔

They rather recalculated the optical appearance. 🤔

Looks exactly like my 28mm summicron asph safari edition, albeit in matt black.  The way I read the quoted text above is what we already knew about the v2 asph and why it superceded the v1.

I prefer the sliding hood of the safari to either of the lens hoods of the v1 and v2 28mm summicrons and it's one reason why I traded my v1 for the safari.   I'd buy the matt version ahead of the standard v2 if I had to make the choice, but I wouldn't swap my safari for the matt black version.

Peter Karbe told us at a reading that there aren’t visible optical reasons to change from the first version of Summicron 2.0-28mm to the second, neither analog nor digital.

Looks great but happy with my 28/2 V2 ASPH.

Truth be told one of the things I didn't like about my 50/1.4 ASPH was the pinch lens cap hanging beyond the hood.

Much happier with the 50/1.4 ASPH BC

It would be nice to see both the 28/2 and 28/1.4 reissued with the 35 APO hood design

Difficult choice, this special edition looks more bulky, also I prefer the removable hood and "classic" engraving.

I stand corrected. Beautifully crafted and especially love the focus tab being metal as well. Gives the whole lens a more solid feel.

The engraving color doesn't seem green, it's more of a matte cream color that plays well with the lens' matte finish.

The retractable hood is a joy to open and close.

Sure a nice offer if you're in the market for a 28 Cron.

Just realized this new lens is a reissue of the 28 ASPH Safari lens.

Been thinking of getting the 28 Cron but Safari is not my cup of tea and not wanting the Lux and the weight. So the new Matt Black is just right for me.

I agree. There’s not a trace of green in the engraving on my copy. It looks like matte white to me. Indeed a beautifully crafted lens.
