Shooting into the sun - Lenses with flare resistance

The now discontinued M Summarits are noted for their flare resistance, the 35 in particular, but there have been good reports on the 50 as well. I read somewhere that Leica applied blackening inside the rear of these lenses for improved flare resistance, but if so, one would think this would be a common practice.

As usual, different experiences.  The 35 Summarit, though, is more often praised.

The Zeiss lenses are very flare resistant, in stark contrast with Leica lenses. The C-Biogon is no exception here. I remember Erwin Putts had an article declaring the C-Biogon the king of flare resistance. The best Leica lens, in this respect, in my experience, was the Summilux 50 ASPH. I used it without a hood with no issues (as I do with all my lenses).

Reports have been that it’s more flare resistant than the Summicron, but that when it exhibits flare (as most any lens can), results are not as pleasing.

Hi, I only have a v4 35mm Summicron, so a flaring comparison may be less revealing.

But the 35mm Summarit, I shall try...

Not necessary on my account.  I care about learning how my own lens samples  perform in practical situations. If you haven’t been concerned about your own, I suspect there’s nothing to be concerned about.  I’ll leave it experts like the late Erwin Puts to conduct controlled tests (he noted the flare resistance of the Summarits).

there is no one lens resist to flare, it's the angle that matters.  use live view to check or shoot that saves you a lot of troubles.

+1,

maybe if someone can design only 1 lens in the barrel, it will be very prone to flare. LOL

It’s called flare resistant, not flare proof, just as weather resistant vs weatherproof.  Any lens can/will flare; some are easier to induce flare under various lighting conditions.  Plus flare rendering characteristics vary and remain subjective.  In the end, as with most any picture/print result, the user is key.
