Voigtlander 50mm f/2 APO vs Leica 50mm f/2 APO

The discussion is going on. Perceived value is subjective, but somehow not everybody accepts this.

As stated before, the 8k Leica is too much for me, I don’t see the value. Now I go one step further, the 1k VL is too much for me as well, I don’t see the value either. I don’t want the perfectness of APO, wouldn’t spend my money on it.

I prefer more the older kind of rendering and glow and here I see the value…

Let's throw something else into the fire and mix it up a little.

There is another apo 50mm lens the "Kern Macro Switar 50mm f 1.9"

Which Leica bought the company back around 1986, if you compare the lens design to the Leica APO Summicron it is very, very close. Could this have been the starting point? Now if I remember they purchased the company to gain their binocular sales for Switzerland, back then the Swiss had a law that Govt items had to be made in country and Leitz wanted the contract for the binocular sales. So it was easy to buy the company to gain the sales.

Just a thought.... Oh and yes the Kern Macro Switar does have issues with flare, but it was older glass and coatings.

A general request:

If you are suspicious that a member might be a troll or the reincarnation of a banned member, please report this!

We have the means to verify accounts and to step in early – if we are notified.

The later we can act, the more collateral damage was done. In this thread I had to delete a lot of posts reacting to the banned troll.

Obviously one hopes there’s more to this than someone not liking the price of a Leica APO and preferring a Voigtlander.

Thus, what is the moral of the story when considering the recent posts?

Those lucky photographers who go for the Voigtländer APO save the equivalent of 70 toilet cleanings (to „clean their toilet with $100 bills“) and they may 70 times feel like „doctors and lawyers“… Boy,  oh boy!

I'm getting a bit sick of pejorative doctor and leica comments.

Thank you so very much, Andreas.

This thread holds great interest for me, and he completely disrupted the discussion, for no reason other than personal glee. I unsubscribed to it and have now resubscribed.

thank you for intervening so decisively!

Haha the 14y old poster was laughing at me. Funny that after 40 years of pleading and teaching i may remain so naive about two things, children and women but this is another story :D. Thank you Andreas.

I am a teacher of 40+ years experience as well. I admire many things about your knowledge of photography and contributions here. Perhaps most, I admire that you believed you could actually engage him constructively. I wish I had that quality!

I agree.

When I was putting myself through college on my own (not cheap!), I made huge sacrifices by saving money, working when I could, and eating lots of ramen to buy a Leica M6. Twenty-two years later it’s still working perfectly, never a hiccup since day one.

And that’s saying a lot because this camera has endured over 1,000 days in a war zone!

The camera is practically retired now, spending most of its days documenting my kids growing up, however the Leica ethos has not changed.

Totally agree!

As Andreas deleted the troll‘s post which I partially quoted (see the quotation marks), I have to clarify that I did not invent the doctor-Leica bashing but just replied to the troll‘s offensive post… Thus, my ironic post now lacks context.
