any recommend alternative round hood for Leica q2 ?

Recommended Posts

Something like this stuff. It has 49mm filter thread on the inner (camera) side,, and 72mm filter thread on the outer side. So it can be attached to Q2 and allows 72mm filter and snap-on lens cape. What not clear is the light blocking capability compared to the original hood.

When I fit a polariser filter, I switch out the Leica shade for a basic round one from Haoge. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Haoge-LH-LQ-Metal-Typ116-Camera/dp/B081S6GH72

Can it permanent replace Leica original hood?
I just learned from another thread that the original hood and camera combination is designed to provide weather seal. I guess it implies your mentioned ventilated shade might lose this advantage.  I hope the non-ventilated full sealed shade is somewhat better in this regard.

You're thinking of the X100V, which requires an adapter to hold a filter and the filter itself completes the weather sealing. The Q2 does not need a filter, hood or the ring to be weather sealed.

What is X100v? You mean Leica’s original hood ?

The Fuji X100V is a small fixed lens camera. Highly regarded by many. It is not as weather proof as the Q2 and, as @hdmesa says, the Q2 is weather proof regardless of the fitting (or not) of a lens shade.

I prefer to use a lens shade but the coatings on lenses are so good these days that it probably makes very little impact on the quality of most pictures (cue many replies telling me I’m wrong!). It does provide some protection from bombs and scrapes though, which is largely why I use it.

I see. Anything that screws onto the existing threads tightly will seal against that back rubber o-ring, be it the original hood, the original protector-ring that replaces the hood when you don't want to use the hood, or a third party hood. You'd have to ask Leica to be sure, but I think that rubber o-ring doesn't need a hood or even the protector ring to complete the weather seal – it simply allows a hood to seal tightly against the lens so you don't have water getting into that space and onto the threads.

  • Q2 hood by Leica – seals against the rubber o-ring
  • Q2 protector ring by Leica – seals against the rubber o-ring
  • Q2 hood by third party that screws into the hood threads – should seal against the rubber o-ring
  • Q2 hood by third party that screws into the lens/filter – use the Q2 protector ring in conjunction with it

Anyone found preferable round non-standard hood for Q/Q2? Preferably with secure snap lens cap over the round hood? Better yet, easy accessible thread for polarizer filter.

You could try the Overgaard lens hood - good product but unfortunately a terrible reputation for customer service.  I must have been one of the lucky few who received the product within a few days of ordering, but the number of complaints on this forum far outweighs the satisfied customers.  Having said that, the product is well made and it makes changing filters easy.  I use mine on the Q2M.

I have vented hoods, not from Overgaard though. I got from eBay for only $5, new. But I found it is second to useless.
The problem is the vent, While it is an excellent idea on OVF rangefinder camera, it is bad for EVF. The hole exposed the lens in rainy days.
It is also bad to attach filter. The vent causes light reflection in the image.
The worst problem is it attracts attention. People Immediately thinking the camera is Leica, though I was using Sony! I even heard talking on my back “He pretends he has a Leica M,”.

You could simply go without a hood and keep a clear protector filter over the lens with a traditional lens cap.  Just a thought.  I purchased and use the Overgaard hood and have no issues with the venting.  That said, I would not recommend a purchase from Overgaard due to the poor service (very long unexplained wait for delivery and no communication from the seller).

It is irrelevant who to purchase from. A vented hood is a vented hood. The vent can expose the lens so not as protective a solid hood, The vent also causes filter reflection for attaching from the outer end.  The vented hood has advantage for traditional optical range finder. Using it on other type of camera makes no sense.
