We have threads for film and threads for digital – so what about a thread for digital that simulates film? You are welcome to share your own pictures, and please let us know which profile or preset you used.

Other film-like profiles and presets are also welcome, as well as discussions around this topic.

When I use film simulations, I consider them the starting point for further adjustment and am concerned about the final look rather than how well a particular film look is simulated. I've tried various profiles and simulations and found, generally, that I like the ones by Cobalt-Image the most because they seem to be based on the most accurate camera profiles. Indeed, Stuart Richardson found that the Cobalt-Image profiles are more accurate and better than custom profiles that he's made, as you can read in his post here and his second post (two posts below the linked one).

Below is an imaged using the Cobalt-Image Kodak Portra 800 (Linear) simulation. There are a lot of other examples of the Cobalt-Image profiles and simulations in the thread linked above, including a comparison of several film simulations including two RNI Aerochrome simulations, although for that image I liked the VSCO E100G- - preset the best.

This is a cool thread, @evikne I’ll have to try it myself.
I like film, digital and basically all image making. I’m not fussy one way or the other, as long I like the outcome. Sometimes it’s the ‘doing’ photography that I find rewarding. Maybe it’s like rod fishing and releasing the catch.

Thanks! I hope this thread can be a source of inspiration and ideas. I am always looking for new profiles myself, because this has become an important part of my post processing.

Not exactly film simulation, but I can also recommend The Classic Presets, CineStock Profiles. The collection contains 50 profiles for Lightroom, simulating color schemes  from movies.

Here is an example with the CineStock 0211 profile:

In case not everyone is familiar with the difference between profiles and presets, develop presets are one-click shortcuts to applying develop/edit settings. You see them on the left of the screen.

The profiles are located on the right side. They leave all the develop/edit controls unchanged, so you are free to adjust them to taste. Unlike presets, profiles can create looks that are not possible with the Lightroom controls on their own.

I much prefer profiles myself. I find them much more convenient to use, and the thumbnails are easier to browse than the small list of presets.

RNI also has a selection of instant film, which I use quite a lot. Here is the Polaroid 690 v2:
