Depends on what I’m photographing ie, if it’s work, such as a wedding or event, I can, and do, frequently switch between a 28mm and a 50mm all day, rarely resorting to anything wider or longer.

For portrait sittings, I do the same but with a 35mm and 75mm or 90mm.

For my personal work as primarily a landscape & travel photographer, I’ll take a 28mm, 50mm and 90mm.  The 28mm is my most used, around 60%, and the 50mm comes in somewhere around 30%.

Out of my 10 Leica M lenses, 3 are 50mm, 2 are 28mm and 2 are 90mm, so to answer the question ‘is 50mm a core focal length?’, I’d say yes.
Definitely.
