As far as which is best...you'll get as many answers as there are responders....best for what purpose, best in what characteristic, best value...you get the picture? In certain years of production, there often were lenses which surpassed them in various ways, in the past notably Zeiss and Canon (in the 1950s), today Voigtlander in certain categories.
