Al Brown Posted November 13, 2021 Author Share #31 Posted November 13, 2021 There was this incredibly cute golden camera produced in VEB Welta-Kamera-Werk of the former GDR (DDR) available in five side trim colors and golden front and back. The half frame camera was named Welta Orix 18x24, but changed the name to Penti in 1959. Its successor, the Penti II, never reached the beauty standards or success of the first model. Al Brown Posted November 15, 2021 Author Share #35 Posted November 15, 2021 A very interesting converted gold plated M3 double stroke with 14K gold surface... now and then, a golden M2, M3, M4 and even M5 surface that have been converted on customer request. Probably the cheapest "gold" Leicas, although not factory originals. Welcome, dear visitor! Herr Barnack Posted November 15, 2021 Share #36 Posted November 15, 2021 (edited) If your goal in life is to take a nice looking camera and inflict maximum fugliness on it, gold plating is certainly the way to do it. Add faux python skin to it and it will induce spontaneous projectile vomiting in those with even the strongest of stomachs. An unintended benefit is that being mugged for your camera will be a non-issue - any thief who is not blind will be on all fours, heaving up the remains of his lunch. It seems that with shiny aftermarket custom gold plated Leicas some photographers just aspire to be different from others.... It is fun to browse the definitions of "aesthetics" by Hegel, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and Kant... The latter sets out the dichotomy between the judgments of beauty being based on feelings vs. defining beauty in the most “rationalist” way according to subject properties alone. Not an easy subject by far. I do, however, absolutely agree on the lizard/snake/croc skin thingy.
andrew01 Posted November 15, 2021 Share #38 Posted November 15, 2021 I am surprised Leica has not made a diamond encrusted camera for the rapper market. Put about 30k worth of diamonds and sell it for a million. 1

As the old saying goes, "Beauty is only skin deep, ugly goes all the way to the bone; beauty will one day fade away but ugly holds its own." Adapted for Leica M cameras: "Beauty is only black paint deep, ugly goes all the way to the pressure plate; black paint will one day rub away but gold plating holds its own."
