Serial number doesn’t match product selected.

I just tried registering my “new” lens with Leica and the site is telling me the serial number doesn’t match.

Just confirm for me that this is an Elmarit-M 28 2.8 IV isn’t it? Serial number 363xxxx which I believe dates it to 1993.

Had anyone ever have this happen on the Leica web site?

Hello Mike,

Nice lens.

I don't have any personal experience with this lens but the WIKI at the top of this page shows it as you wrote above.

Why don't you call Customer Service in Wetzlar in the morning & ask them?

Nowadays calling Wetzlar is like calling Bethalto.

Best Regards,

Michael

Mike,

Just curious (in French "vilain défaut", I assume)

Why register such old lens made almost three decades ago, now ?

It just something I do, partly to have another record in case of loss or theft, the more evidence of ownership I can give the insurance company the happier they will be.

Anyway - yes the lens pictured is a 28mm v.4, and yes the S/N is "viable" in that the very first 28 v.4 (1992) was numbered 358xxxx (and I have one numbered 366xxxx, nominally from 1994). According to E. Puts Leica Lens Compendium.

But - Leica is known for producing lenses in batches - and has not always been perfectly consistent in record-keeping. (So long as every lens has a number and every number has a lens - but even that has not always occurred ;) ). Leica's records are not really maintained for users or collectors, at least in the past. Just internal housekeeping (some from pre-1970 were lists hand-written in pencil or pen ;) ).

I expect the contact you've been given will take care of it, though.

Email Birgitta.Mielke @ leica-camera.com with the lens details and she’ll take care of it.

She has helped me several times with registering products after the web page rejected their serial numbers.

Erik

Thank you Erik, I was not able to register my Summicron-M 35mm V4 so I emailed her and all was solved within a couple of hours.
