jtharvie Posted August 14, 2006 Share #1 Posted August 14, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) LC-1, Heliopan circular polarizing filter, RAW, PSC2 levels, highlights, contrast, USM, Noise Reduction, Save for Web. Last of the grain elevators, the dominant landmark of every Prairie town from Winnipeg to Calgary now being replaced with inland terminals that are serviced by big Semi trucks. Without getting too political, this is a real shame as most small farmers can no longer make a living on a few sections. Soon only the huge corporation farms will be the only food suppliers here in Canada. Not sure that is a good thing. Here's three views. (Hmmm, I used the paper clip but it would not let me put text between photos.)
Advertisement Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 Hi jtharvie, Take a look here Petersfield Elevator. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
biglouis Posted August 14, 2006 Share #2 Posted August 14, 2006 Lovely photographs. The contrast between the field and the sky in the first one is particularly eye-catching. The title made me smile, I used to live near Petersfield - in Hampshire in the UK. LouisB
jtharvie Posted August 14, 2006 Author Share #3 Posted August 14, 2006 Thanks Louis, When my wife and I were in London last year and trying to find our way by train to Bottesford / Belvoir Castle we were quite amazed at how many of our towns in Canada are named after towns in the UK. I guess that stands to reason as we are part of the Commonwealth . . . we tend to forget our history till it pokes us in the eye! stuny Posted August 14, 2006 Share #4 Posted August 14, 2006 John - All three are lovely for their colors, gtextures (you can almost feel the spikey stubble), and focus. #1, though is superb with the left framing of the very close partial bale. When I was in the Air Foce in the late '60s, early '70s about 150 miles south of you (Grand Forks) the farming corporations had already pretty well decimated the smaller farmers in North Dakota. It must be far worse now.
jtharvie Posted August 14, 2006 Author Share #5 Posted August 14, 2006 Thanks Stu, Yes I was down in Northwood area last year and didn't see one elevator from the border all the way to Grand Forks. I hope to get down there again this year for harvest . . . there is a really neat field just outside Edenburg that I like . . . hoping he planted Sunflowers this year. elansprint72 Posted August 15, 2006 Share #6 Posted August 15, 2006 John, Much of the grain from your Canadian elevators used to find its way across the Atlantic to the UK and into elevators around the Manchester docks; the last of these was demolished (with great difficulty) by controlled explosions about 20 years ago. Somewhere I have the negatives of the timed explosions and the resulting leaning concrete elevator. Nice set of history shots. Cheers, Pete. jtharvie Posted August 16, 2006 Author Share #7 Posted August 16, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Now that is something I'd like to see. Present day photos are one thing but bits of history are a precious commodity that I for one certainly appreciate. It puts things into perspective I think.
