Aquilasfx Posted October 20, 2021 Share #1 Posted October 20, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, I recently bought a Leica M summicron 35 IV, and only now I realised that is a bit loos in the front part. How I can disassemble the lens and fix it? I am good fixing small things, but I can't find a proper video to unscrew the two elements. Do have I to use my fingers in the plastic inner part close to the lensand try to unscrew that? It seems to rotate. In a video with APSH model I saw that they used a special tube wrench, but with version IV this seems that can't be used due there is no space for the wrench. I hope that you can help me. thanks

See this thread, with precaution 😉 Noctilux, I careful read what is written, but is seems that they specified only how to unscrew if you have a German version. I have a Canadian one. I read on internet to unscrew the front element and tight or re-cement the front part. Can you please explain how to unscrew that front part without brake anything? Do have I to try to unscrew with lens hood attached?
a.noctilux Posted October 21, 2021 Share #5 Posted October 21, 2021 (edited) @Aquilasfx sorry to let you know that I've never repair my multiple Summicron 35 IV. I use them for a while, and experienced some flaws in the past. Each time I let the trusted repair men do the 'good' job. I think that the 'slanted' or loose front element (part) is something only on canadian made 'IV' with plastic (or synthetic) part, replaced with metallic part when moved to Germany. One of the 'bad habit' is to mount/unmount the lens holding the hood (I had done that before the repair man said not to do). like here, film M so not 'seen' in the field https://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/284086-leica-m-film-photos-feel-free-to-share-yours/?do=findComment&comment=4289485 Welcome, dear visitor! (hood was slanted, so weird vignetting on many frames) This plastic ring may be the culprit another good reading article, here Edited October 21, 2021 by a.noctilux
 Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! (hood was slanted, so weird vignetting on many frames) This plastic ring may be the culprit another good reading article, here Anyway I opened my lens unscrewing the screws on the lens mount and I disassembled in focus part from the lens part with aperture ring. Then I figure out that inside there is that plastic part (obviously mine is a Canadian IV), and I realised that that loose movement depends by the helicoids (the brass one to the aluminium one they tend to move a bit)… I think that I can’t do anything. Anyway when I reassembled all I noticed a little bit less movement, but then I found a things that I didn’t noticed before, the focus ring is going lower then 0,7 scale it move 5 millimeters more to the left. The infinity focus stop perfectly. before I didn’t noticed that, do you think that I reassembled bad the lens? (Anyway I didn’t remeber that was going lower then 0,7 scale (maybe I didn’t noticed before. I don’t know if it is normal or not). for the helicoids I cleaned and used bit of oil for razors for now. What kind of grease do have I to use? thanks
a.noctilux Posted October 21, 2021 Share #7 Posted October 21, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) @Aquilasfx bravo, you had done it. 👍 ... For reference, I discovered old thread..."IV" Seen this thread also here Lens focus nearer than expected, normal with 35mm Summicron IV. Most of my lenses RF focus less than stated 0.7m, tolerance in this close focus may come from the real focal length or something else, I don't know or don't want to know. a.noctilux Posted October 24, 2021 Share #9 Posted October 24, 2021 (edited) As I wrote, I never grease any lens. I know that there are more than my knowledge to maintain lenses or bodies (M,R, LTM Leica and more). I pay the good technical persons to do that better than myself. Sorry not to be able to help. Note: I think that the grease to use is not regular type so the good technician is the good person to do with the right grease of his choice. to read here in French 35mm compact [... Gérard ] Gérard (meger) worked for repair/CLA my Leica gears for decades... Good luck Edited October 24, 2021 by a.noctilux
