I was tempted to preorder the lens. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. I know, I melt for fast and odd lenses. The new Heliar promises to be slightly odd and full of flaws. My copy of the Voigtlander 50mm Heliar has just arrived. It was in the mail today and it seems that the rest of the weekend is dedicated to this lens. Took a few photos today in drizzle at first. Luckily, it cleared up later on to catch some blue sky. The new Heliar 50mm is right up my alley. Since the lens isn't a rumour anymore, as of last week it's being delivered to brave customers I open a new thread for some photos if you like. So here are some shots of day 1, you are welcome to add your beauties;)

The lens is certainly a wunderbar low contrast lens which makes the focus peaking sometimes very difficult or impossible.

  • 1 year later...

Nice pictures, they give a good idea of the close focus and wide aperture....

I could be tempted by this lens but I have a question : is there a "hard point" in the focusing ring at 0.7m ? ot does it turn freely from infinity to 50cm without giving a hint to the user that the minimum focusing distanc of the M rangefinder is reached ?

Thank you

Unfortunately, there is no way to tell just by feel when you enter the close focus zone (0.5 m to 0.7 m).

This 'issue' is more internet amplified perception than a real problem; in practice it is very obvious that the rangefinder patch has stopped moving.

Apart from the rangefinder patch not moving as a clear indicator of being 'too close', surely most photographers are capable of estimating subject distances of less than 1 metre!

I don't understand why some people insist on turning this into a problem.  It isn't a problem!

The lens is very special and I guess not for everday use. It's nice to see here how the sharpness rapidly decreases from the centre to the edge at open aperture.
