Since one cannot buy FP4 (pre-Plus), nor Paterson chemicals like Acutol, perhaps this is all useless.

So my night film photography is a little different.  I love long exposure film photography (tripod, 35m or MF), the challenge of correcting exposure for reciprocity failure, and the unpredictability of the outcome especially with respect to colour.

I usually use Ektar 100 for tripod use, occasionally Cinestill 800 (usually reserved for handheld). BW400CN for B&W (still have some in the freezer).

I'll post some 35mm Ektar and Cinestill now and MF later...

Frankly, I find the look of film at night much nicer than the plastic look of those ultra-perfect digital images. I like the look of film at night precisely because it isn't perfect.

100% agree with this.

As for a particular film stock, I've been getting away lately with "just" Portra 400 (with f/1.4 or f/1.5 lenses).

The shutter count usually has to be set at 1/60 sec though.

Here's one (not artistic) example shot with Portra 400 and the Voigtlander 50mm 1.5 II @ 1/60 sec.

I might venture into Portra 800, but so far I haven't needed to do so.

I wish Fuji still made Superia 1600.  I shot this scene with that film in a really dark church with an 135mm lens set at f/3.5:

When seeing these two images I agree, too. I think this might be the first time I like film at night more than digital, especially the photo of the hand.

As for the Portra 400, you shot it handheld at 1/60th? Did you also develop the film at 400 or you pushed it ?

Beautiful images. Thanks.

Many thanks, Steven.

Yes, the Portra 400 was shot handheld at 1/60 sec, and I didn't have to push it.

I made the mistake of focusing on the store sign, since I didn't think the foreground elements  (car, gas pumps) would be visible enough, but they are, and the f/1.5 aperture robs them of a little sharpness.

Actually, I think it looks better like this. It gives the image a sense of depth, while the foreground elements are still clearly recognizable.
